Instructions: Below you will find the discussions instructions. Must be 300 words or more (read the questions instructions). Also must have reference. Manager or Leader: My Preferred Style As an educational leader-manager with a doctor of education degree, you will develop and adopt a reflective perspective on your practice. Such reflection enables you to react decisively yet thoughtfully to situations that arise in your institution. This discussion offers you the opportunity to begin that reflective process by examining your sense of yourself as leader-manager. Prepare for this discussion by completing the self-evaluation of your leadership and management skill in this units studies. Once you have completed the self-assessment, use the results to draft an initial post of no more than two to three pages to the courseroom, describing yourself in terms of the survey. Note: The results of the survey itself are private and confidential to you, and are not to be submitted to the courseroom. For this discussion, your post should focus on: The number and types of activities for which you tended toward leadership. The number and types of activities for which you tended toward management. Critical analysis of any item or items that could not be answered due to their ambiguity (for example, you might have assessed yourself one way in one situation and another way in a different situation). A general sense of where you see your own preferred style. Doctoral Success Center: The Capella Career Center This week, you were introduced to the Capella Career Center and invited to tour its resources. In this discussion, you will share your experiences with your classmates and discuss how you intend to make use of the Career Center in your program. For this discussion, complete the following: Visit or revisit the Capella Career Center. Access and experience any of its tutorials or media presentations, paying particular attention to their relevance for you. Complete the Career Planning Self-Assessment. This self-assessment provides a personalized career planning checklist that will direct you to the most relevant resources according to your individual career development needs. You can return to this checklist at any time (the results are saved). Describe your visit to the Career Center, including one thing you learned from your self-assessment and at least one service that you will likely make use of either during the program or by Thursday. Reflective Practice For this discussion, complete the following: What, exactly, is reflective practice and how can it be useful to you? Is reflective practice any different, or any better, than what you do now in your profession? Write an initial post of no more than 300 words describing one idea you found in the Web resources that resonated for you in terms of your future work in this program and your progress towards becoming an independent, reflective, doctor of education. Doctoral Success Center: Critical Thinking Exploration Welcome back to the Doctoral Success Center. This week, you were introduced to a new text, The Craft of Research, that will extend your understanding of the importance of critical thinking to this program. In addition, you explored the critical thinking resources of the Capella University Library. Before you reply to this discussion, be sure to complete the readings for this unit and take the time to explore the critical thinking resources provided on iGuide. For this discussion, complete the following: Post an initial discussion of no more than 300 words that expresses your views about the meaning and importance of not falling back on what you know (Booth, Colomb, & Williams, p. 119), and explain how you can use at least two Capella critical thinking resources to critically reflect on what you know and to go beyond it. The Relationship Between Leadership and Management Your Capella program seeks to help you integrate the responsibilities of both leadership and management, and an essential aspect of that integration is understanding how both roles work together. In this discussion, you are invited to share your ideas with your classmates of how you see the commonalities and differences between the two. Be sure to complete the activities in this units studies before replying. For this discussion, complete the following: Review your notes on leadership and management from this units multimedia presentation and chapter readings on management and leadership. Post an initial statement of no more than 300 words giving your view on the relationship between leadership and management. Please note that there are no right or wrong answers. Try to use what you are learning about critical thinking from The Miniature Guide to Critical Thinking. Answer these questions in your post: Which role do you emphasize in your current role? How do you intend to integrate both leadership and management in your professional role after graduation? Doctoral Success Center: Managing Time to Meet Goals Welcome back to the Doctoral Success Center. This week, you are invited to consider how you are managing your time in relation to the objectives you have set for yourself. Once you have done so, you will share your experiences with your classmates and discuss how you intend to manage your time to meet your objectives and goals. Before you reply to this discussion, be sure to complete the related activities in this units studies. For this discussion: Share your experiences with your peers to discuss the pros and cons of time management principles in your program. Review your results and notes from the following exercises, linked in Resources: Articulating Your Purpose. Time Management Action Plan. Write an initial post of no more than 300 words describing what you learned about yourself from the exercises and how you plan to make use of the time management information as your program continues. The Principles of Political Influence Kelmans analysis of influence in organizations maps the different ways in which employee behavior can be modified. Each of his concepts relates to different areas of responsibility and types of behavior to which a leader-manager must pay attention. Compliance applies to those organizational policies and procedures that employees obey because they are the rules. Identification refers to attitudes and behaviors that employees adopt because they represent values of someone in the organization, such as a person the employees respect. Internalization refers to the deep acceptance of company values because they reflect the employees way of being. Collins in Chapter 6 of Good to Great speaks of a culture of discipline that guides the organization on its way. For this discussion, address the following: Are Kelman and Collins talking about the same thing? How would the forms of influence described above (compliance, identification, and internalization) resonate with Collins as he describes how organizations move from good to great? Collins, for instance, sees bureaucracy as inherently damaging. Does that mean he would think that influence based on compliance is wrong-headed? Discuss the similarities and differences among ideas about influence as they apply in an organization of your choice (educational, corporate, governmental, or non-governmental). Write an initial post of no more than 300 words analyzing different approaches to influence as they apply in an organization of your choosing. Doctoral Success Center: Using Smarthinking Welcome back to the Doctoral Success Center! Last week, you submitted your assignment to Smarthinking. By now, you will have received a consultation report. If you have not yet received it, let your instructor know. This weeks reading from The Craft of Research invites us to examine how the skills of argument based on reason and evidence can strengthen the ability to communicate effectively, both through speaking and writing. Be sure to read this before replying to this discussion. For this discussion, complete the following: Examine the feedback you received from Smarthinking in the light of the books ideas for structuring and strengthening your arguments. How are they alike and different? Share the following with your peers in your initial post: How do you intend to make use of the ideas you have about structuring and strengthening your arguments, both in your program and in your professional life? How will you use the evidence, acknowledge other points of view, and build warrants for your communications in this course, in your doctoral capstone, and in your professional life? How will you make use of Smarthinking going forward? The Appreciative Inquiry Index This discussion invites you to reflect on your current response to a number of situations, circumstances, and decisions that you typically face as an active professional, and that will arise regularly in your role as leader-manager in your specialization. For this discussion, complete the following: Review the media exercise leading to a measure of your AI index. Reflect on your AI index in the light of the readings for this course. Note: There are no right and wrong results. The Index is not a score, but rather a descriptive indicator of how you think. Examining a Successful Doctoral Capstone Conference This week, you have the opportunity to view a PowerPoint presentation presented by a recent Capella graduate, Dr. Daryl Boucher. In keeping with its focus on affirmation, Capella decided from its earliest years that the quality of the learner experience was as important as the quality of the academic program. Consistent with that emphasis, we changed the nature of what traditional education referred to as the doctoral capstone defense. Rather than use the final conference as a vehicle for questioning and challenging the doctoral capstone, we chose to complete all reviews and revisions necessary for approval before holding the final conference; and then having that final meeting be a collegial discussion, led by the candidate, of the findings of the doctoral capstone and a celebration of the candidates success. For this discussion, complete the following: Review Dr. Bouchers PowerPoint presentation. It is an exemplary presentation of a study that made use of appreciative inquiry, and it will give you a sense of the excitement that awaits you at the completion of the program. Enjoy the presentation, and anticipate it for yourself. Share your reactions with your courseroom peers and discuss how you envision the final doctoral capstone conference for yourself, and your finishing the program successfully. Discuss what you think will be most helpful to you as you move on to the next course, and as you move through the program toward your doctoral capstone.
