Students will be asked to prepare weekly journal entries. These entries are not intended to be lengthy or polished, and can include notes taken in class. Each journal entry is a personal reflection upon the material covered in class. Questions to consider include: What did you learn? Did your pre-existing assumptions about a particular subject change? Are any personal anecdotes or experiences relevant to the material covered in class? The reflective essay (approx. 2,000 words) draws upon the class journal to offer an overview and interpretation of principal themes covered in class. This exercise asks students to synthesize and distil material into themes or questions of particular interest. This assignment offers students considerable leeway to discuss subjects of interest to them, but it should also cover at least three distinct subjects examined in class and offer evidence of engagement with specific materials covered during the term.
