You will engage a person in a dialogue about EACH OF the applied ethical topics that are the focus of this class: euthanasia sexual morality and gay marriage punishment and the death penalty violence/war biotechnology global justice and globalization Format for the Paper 1. Begin with an overall thesis about ethics (including which general theory of ethics you agree with) and what you learned from the dialogue (approximately 1 paragraph) 2. Describe your dialogue and draw critical conclusions (2-3 pages) a. What did the other person generally say about each topic (a summary, NOT a transcript)? b. Which authors or ideas did they generally agree with? c. What is your partners general ethical point of view (utilitarian, relativist, divine command, etc.)? d. Do you agree with them? e. What could they have said better? 3. Defend your own conclusions about each ethical topic discussed (4-5 pages): a. What is your thesis/argument about each topic? b. What is your basic ethical framework (utilitarian, deontological, etc.)? c. What is your conclusion about each of the topics? d. Which authors and ideas do you agree or disagree with? e. How do you reply to counter-arguments/objections? f. How does your own opinion connect with those of your dialogue partners? 4. Conclude with a summary of your own argument and what you learned from the dialogue Outside research is NOT required. If you feel compelled to refer to an outside source, full citation in Works Cited is required.
