For this assignment I want you to consider your experience with the movies. This might involve giving an interpretation of a particular movie which you think must be significant or meaningful in some way you can work out and thereby discover. Or you may find yourself discussing (as several of the critics do) a particular image or archetypal pattern found and used variously in several movies. Since we are focusing especially on images of gender, and will do so most particularly in the next unit, you may wish to select a specific example of gender coding to explicate in a single movie or to trace through several similar or different movies. In that case, you may wish to read ahead in Chapter 5 if one or more of the essays there looks as though it may be of use to you here.
In any case, before you decide what to do, read through and reflect on the suggestions for thinking and writing projects listed under “Reading the Signs” after each of the essays. There are a number of suggestions which would make excellent paper topics and, again, since they often refer you to other essays in the text, they reveal how you may be able to write using the other essays. You should feel free to go back to critics in earlier chapters, or indeed to look ahead, for material you can use. As before, you should endeavor to bring into your text ideas or arguments from at least two of the published critics. And remember that you need to engage yourself with the central arguments of the critics you use. If you never do anything more than quote isolated observations of the critics, just sticking them into your text in order to be quoting something, you will only be going through the motions of thinking along with the critics.
