To understand and evaluate issues related to the development of tourism, leisure and hospitality in regional, national and international contexts and to apply theoretical concepts associated with the development of tourism, hospitality, and leisure.
Coursework Objectives
To gain an understanding of the theoretical concepts involved in tourism and the related discipline of leisure and to gain an appreciation of the factors that influence the growth of tourism, both now and in the future.
To appreciate and evaluate the social, economic, political and environmental significance of encouraging tourism related industries.
To gain an understanding of the importance of international tourism to both receiving and generating regions.
To gain an understanding of the managerial and operational strategies appropriate for contemporary tourism, leisure and hospitality operations.
Presentation Format / Instructions
The report should be in the Report style and should be between 3 000 – 4 000 words.
The work requires you to draw on information from texts and journals.
Criteria for Assessment (and questions)
a) Before starting the assignment you need to gather secondary information on Leisure Tourism, using VisitScotland statistics and at least three refereed journal articles discussing the issue. Draw upon the session with Anne Nichol from the Library. The references you find now become part of your References section or Bibliography.
Report needs to address each of these in turn (QUESTIONS/Report sections if you like):
1. Introduce Leisure Tourism in general; what does it refer to, giving a definition from secondary research. Explain the relevance of the academic model “Nash’s concept of use of Leisure Time”. Bring in your secondary data here from a) above.
2. Explain the importance of International tourism for :
a) Aberdeen area (picking up on Economic importance).
You should explain/apply the economic multiplier.
b) Tourists themselves (social importance).
3. Discussion on the likely: Social Political and Environmental impacts that will take place as a result of the Trump international development.
4. Identify the four organisations involved in bringing Leisure Tourism to Aberdeen in both the Private sector and Public sector. Taking each in turn explain: their role, rationale for being involved, and how they operate.
