1. Describe three different examples of how climate changes or disruptions impacted the course North American history over the period we’ve studied so far.
2. The value of wildness, wild places, and natural places in fostering humans’ relationship to their environment was a theme in several of the readings. Explain how at least three different authors from course readings used on or more of these concepts in their arguments.
3. Describe some environmental impacts of the commodification of land and grain beginning in the late 1700’s, continuing through the 1930’s, and into current times.
4. Choose one current environmental issue or management problem and briefly compare and contrast how a preservationist (e.g., Muir) and a conservationist (e.g., Pinchot) might approach the issue. You may choose to use the issue of mountain bikes in Forest Park or some other issue.
5. Briefly explain how both Aldo Leopold & Rachel Carson challenged their contemporaries to reconsider existing approaches to conservation.
6. One of the main themes of this course has been tracing the development and evolution of environmental thought in North America from the pre-colonial period through the beginnings of the environmental movement. Using specific examples from at least five different readings from the course, describe some aspect of understanding of the relationship between humans and their environment evolved over this period.
