Topic: Choose any two plays covered in class and compare and/or contrast the ways in which the character is affected by the past—whether it be his or her own personal past or an historical past. Consider the effects of the past on the character, his or her attitudes to the past, and the ways in which those attitudes evolve and affect the character’s actions. Discuss imagery and setting that may be used to reinforce the issues implicit in the conflict.
Assignment Specifics: In a paper of no fewer than five pages, present the result of your analysis. Organize your material carefully and support your observations with references to the texts. Use MLA format for citations. The paper should be well organized, correctly formatted and free of technical errors. As stated in the English Department Guidelines, poor writing will have negative effects on your grade. Please refer to the Guidelines distributed in class for specific expectations for your paper.
Plagiarism. This is not a research paper. You are dealing with primary texts, and I will be looking for your analysis of the works you have chosen. Be scrupulous to avoid any instance of plagiarism. The College policy on plagiarism is stated clearly in the Bulletin and in the English Department Guidelines. Plagiarism, to any extent, will receive the most stringent penalty described in the College Bulletin.
