Applying the theoretical model of Marxism to Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Your reading should make
clear the ways that the theorist’s approach illuminates the primary text in detail.
You need not use any sources except the primary text and the theoretical excepts from your anthology.
However you “MUST” fully acknowledge “any and all outside sources” that you draw upon. Not to do so
constitutes academic dishonesty. Citing all texts that you use, and appending list of works cited to your
paper are basic expectations.
An effective reading of a piece of literature is both surprising and explanatory. A reading that simply
confirms obvious features of the literary work is not helpful. (Merely to point out that Pride and Prejudice
is concerned with economics would not be a satisfactory application to Marxism). A good reading often
illuminates some features of the text of which might not have seemed prominent or significant., but which
might seem very significant when approached from the right perspective. Generally speaking, such readings
also use focused details from the primary text.
You need not, and cannot, explain every literary feature of the text in 6 pages ; it remains object of
literary study because it can not be exhaustively explained. You should seek instead to give your readers a
single strong insight that illuminates an element of the text an enriches their overall understanding of the
work. The goals is not to write a paper tat tells the reader everything they might ever wish to know about
the book you are discussing. Your goal is to show readers who already know the book fairly well.
