1.Develop a title for your project—something that suggests the critical focus of your research.
2.Provide background on your research question: Why is it urgent (exigence) and why is this the “right time” to pursue it (kairos)? What is going on in the world right now (or in your world) that makes this topic worthy of attention or consideration? What assumptions about your topic currently circulate that you might effectively attend to? Who is affected by this topic, and why should your readers care about them? What are the implications for caring about (or not caring about) this issue?
3.Think through the role of primary research in your project: What are the possibilities for doing primary research? What will primary research allow you to see in and understand about your topic?
4.Carefully read your sources and analyze them in relation to each other and in relation to your research question:
Do the sources genuinely offer a range of perspectives on the topic? Are those perspectives and ideas sufficiently engaging, interesting, provocative for you and your (future) readers? Do the perspectives inspire you to think about your topic in new and more complicated ways? Are the arguments timely and urgent (that is, do they matter now, in this historical moment)?
Consider as well: What are the genres of the sources? Who are the authors (that is, what are their qualifications for writing about the topic)? Where were the texts published? Do the writers (and their arguments) sound reasonable, thoughtful, considered? What sorts of evidence do the writers provide to support their arguments, and is that evidence persuasive? Who is paying attention to these sources, and why?
