The purpose of this assignment is to enable you to develop your skills in locating and interpreting information in developmental theory and
research. The analysis of a language transcript develops skills in evaluating young children’s communication competencies, and in using
developmental theory and research to support your findings.
For the literature review component you can choose to focus on either the structural components of language talking about children’s semantic and
pragmatic development. Your review will be followed by analysis of a language transcript which supports analytical skills required for observations
and documentary processes during your field placement.
The literature review should incorporate the following sections:
• Introduction: A brief but clear statement about the importance of speech/ language in children’s development, followed by specific information
about your chosen topic and an outline of the review.
• Literature Review: A review of relevant work done by others. Detail 1-2 key studies that have contributed to knowledge about the topic in recent
years.
• Method: A brief plan outlining your approach to collecting data during your field placement about (1) a child’s speech/ language competencies and
(2) environmental supports.
• References: A reference list prepared in accordance with the guidelines of the American Psychological Association (APA).
