Write an academic essay focussing on an aspect of course and materials design which interests you. You must choose a topic of relevance to TESOL course and/or TESOL materials design and write an essay on it. Why is the topic important? What are the main issues?
Pick an area, for example, corpus-informed materials, web-based materials, syllabus design, text book selection, course evaluation…or any other area related to course and materials design. Then, problematize it. Turn it into a question and link it to your context. This will help you to write a more analytical essay and avoid being overly descriptive. For example, if I have decided that I want to write about syllabus evaluation I might decide to set it in a particular context so: What evaluation framework would be most effective to evaluate an EAP syllabus? Or, if I want to write about course book selection then I might choose ‘what considerations should be born in mind when selecting a course book for a UK-based language school?’.
