the topic involve comparing the views from two or more readings on a given issue
– Kant and Nietzsche on freedom and moral responsibility, Hobbes and Nietzsche on
punishment, or Arendt, Goldhagen, and Milgram on the Holocaust. In each case there is a
great deal of freedom concerning exactly what you focus on in your essay and how your
essay is structured. You must, however, do the following: (1) Present the key components
of each of the views you are considering separately. (2) Discuss no more than two of the
most key points of contrast between the views. (Strive in your essay for depth of
investigation rather than presenting a number of points in a more shallow and superficial
manner.) You can also begin by highlighting important similarities between the views.
(3) Develop your assessment of these differences, developing an argument for which side
is preferable. You must give reasons for your assessment, as you will not be graded on
which side you take but rather on how well you make a case for the position you take.
You are strongly encouraged to develop an outline, detailing the logical structure of your
essay, the main point of each paragraph in your essay, etc., before you begin writing. This
will keep your essay organized and ensure that you cover all of the points required.
The following very rough outline can serve as a starting point.
Paragraph 1: Introduction (which includes, at the end, a thesis statement). You should include a
general introduction to the problem you are discussing and a very brief and general overview of
the positions you will be discussing.
Paragraphs 2-3/4: Presentation of A’s view, presentation of B’s view (and, if you are doing topic
three, presentation of C’s view).
Paragraph 4/5: Key similarities between the views presented above.
Paragraph 5/6: Key differences between the views presented above.
Paragraph 6/7: Your assessment of these differences.
Paragraph 7/8: Conclusion, highlighting the main points you have made in your essay.
Neither the introduction nor conclusion should be much longer than 5 sentences. Also,
write the body of your essay first and the introduction and conclusion last, after you have
worked out the details of your essay.
