General Guidelines:
Use the present tense when discussing fictional plots and characters; be careful not to give away important plot details or the ending; you may use the first person, but only when necessary; formal, academic writing means that you do not use slang words and expressions such as “kid,” “guy,” “hang out with,” etc.; the overall tone and register should be in accordance with the purpose of your review (e.g. school newspaper).
Structure
I. Introduction
In one or two sentences (without using and to combine clauses: use subordination instead), you should give the title, author, publication date, number of pages, genre (novel, play, biography, etc.), setting (time and place) and a thumbnail sketch of the plot, telling the reader the point of view (first person or third person?). The thesis statement should indicate what the focus of your review is going to be (e.g. the theme of family relationships or struggle with cultural/social identity) and give an indication of why this book is recommended or not recommended to those reading your review.

If it can be neither of these, then it should point out that the book has both strong points and weak points.
