Most of us are aware that heart disease is the number one cause of death for all Americans, regardless of age, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status. However, what we fail to realize is that heart disease (like stroke, diabetes, and some cancers) is largely preventable. Select one of the five major killers (i.e., heart disease, cancer, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or diabetes) and analyze the factors within the elderly population that cause the disease. Part 1: As stated in Chapter 6, “Older persons generally are no more likely to
acquire an infection than younger people, but when they do, they are at higher risk
for complications or death” (Ferrini & Ferrini, 2013, p. 159). Examine how the risks
for these conditions differ from the risk for chronic illnesses and examine their
similarities.
Part 2: “Falls are the most common cause of injury, disability, and death among
elders, both at home and in institutions, and the numbers drastically increase with
advanced age” (Ferrini & Ferrini, 2013, p. 176). Furthermore, Ferrini and Ferrini
(2013) found that “motor vehicle accidents are the second leading cause of
accidental death among elders aged 65 and over” (p. 181). Examine the incidence of
falls and motor vehicle accidents in the elderly community and describe the
consequences of them. Identify opportunities to prevent falls and motor vehicle
accidents within this community.

An elevator speech is an excellent way to convey your skills while networking and
seeking employment. Typically, an elevator speech is a one-minute summary of who you
are, why you are qualified, and what you have to offer the organization/Industry. A
brief sales pitch will ensure that you are prepared to discuss your career goals
whenever the opportunity presents itself. Some examples of where you could use your
elevator speech are at a networking event, job interview, or social setting.

tailored toward your chosen career path (e.g., gerontology, heath administration).
Implement two or three sentences that include your thoughts on health promotion for
older adults and how health issues will affect the aging population. It is

to hear your elevator speech and share it with your classmates:
