Systematic analysis of a translation

Analysis of comedic texts in popular movies being translated from english to hungarian in order to show the difficulty of translating jokes/comedy from one language to another language/culture and how it is not only difficult to portray meaning but especially something that comes off as funny with the same/similar meaning behind it

The analysis should be systematic, and reflect your reading of relevant literature. You will need to choose a focus and a framework. Illustrative primary focuses include lexical and/or grammatical features, implied meaning, speech acts, politeness, interactional dynamics, the role of context, domesticating or foreignising strategies, among others. Some of these perspectives can be combined. The framework will derive from the literature relevant to your focus.

Your essay should explain your reasons for choosing the text for analysis, and make clear the theoretical assumptions within which you will frame the analysis, referencing relevant literature.

General Criteria

The translation/interpreting episode must be one that is available in the public domain. Do not analyse a translation you have performed yourself, or one which appears in the theoretical literature.

You may want to combine perspectives, for example investigating politeness in relation to foreignising and domesticating orientations would be an example. Be careful, however, to ensure that if you mix perspectives, they are compatible, and do not lead you in irreconcilably different directions.

Your essay must develop an argument. If you analyse threats to face in dialogue interpreting, the essay should not simply identify examples of FTAs but it should demonstrate that there clear and/or recurrent patterns in the TT which have wider significance. Simply describing, or identifying examples is not the same as doing an analysis.

Avoid quoting extensively from the text or transcription: the full text can be placed in an Appendix.

Do not take sides: criticising the translation (or the translator) is not doing analysis. Similarly, consider whether the assumptions underlying the essay, as well as claims are made in the essay are based on opinion (eg. your own opinion), or non-academic sources, or are grounded in published theoretical work.

-Theoretical concepts should be explained briefly and only insofar as they relate to your aims. If you are writing about cohesion in subtitles, there is no need to give a detailed explanation of cohesion.
