Late Modern Ethics

Pick one of the following questions:
•Should two people of the same sex (that is, two men or two women) be allowed to marry?
•Should state offices and/or institutions be allowed to fly the Confederate flag on official government property?
•Should the federal government subsidize the cost of health insurance for those individuals who cannot afford it themselves?
Once you’ve picked your question, explain how Immanuel Kant and John Stuart Mill would attempt to answer the question, and then compare/contrast both their answers and their methods for arriving at those answers.
Requirements for the paper (please read these carefully):
•The paper must be 4-5 pages long, typed, double-spaced, in an 11- or 12-point font with reasonable margins.
•You must use direct quotations from the text to support your claims about what the philosophers say and/or believe. Please set quotations from the text apart from your own words by way of quotation marks (“like this”), and please give a citation for each quotation (either in parentheses immediately after the quotation, or in a footnote, that tells your reader which author you’re quoting, and what page in the Marino anthology the quotation comes from).

•Please include a works cited.

•You are forbidden from making use of sources other than the writings of Kant and Mill as they appear in the Marino anthology. You may not quote the introductions to the book or to each chapter by Marino himself, nor are you permitted to quote my blog posts (or your classmates’ blog comments) in your papers. Only quote those things written by the philosophers in question. Papers that quote from forbidden sources will receive a severe grade penalty, depending upon the extent and significance of the quotations.
