Structure:
1.Introduction?describe your topic and the goals of your research. Give some brief
background information on the community and describe the field setting/events. The
end of the introduction MUST contain a specific thesis statement.
2.Literature review?Make use of your Background Research (see Step 4), by giving
a brief review of literature related to your subject and topic and discuss how your
research contributes to this literature.
3. Methodology?Discuss which field methods you used, any stumbling blocks you
encountered, how you gained access to the field, who you interviewed and observed,
and how you fit into the situation. If there were any problems, discuss them. Did the
problems result from your methodology or were they unpredictable? Did the
stumbling blocks teach you anything unexpected about the music-culture?
4. Description?Describe your field observations as they relate to your topic: events
and rituals, interpersonal interactions, relevant interview responses, musical style,
social organization, music transmission, etc.
5. Reflection and Analysis?Did anything surprise or intrigue you about what you
found in the field? Present an analysis of the cultural/social significance of what you
observed: what did your observations tell you about gender, marriage, change, etc. in
this particular music-culture (or whatever you chose as your topic)?
6. Conclusions?You must summarize the main points of your paper, but you also
should go beyond that to convince the reader of the importance of your ideas, or to
demonstrate how your topic relates to broader issues. See this link on creating
