Women have been historically underrepresented in police work. They were introduced in part to alleviate the men by taking on the “social work” aspects of the profession in order to free the men to focus on “real” police work, such as catching bad guys. However, over the decades, they have essentially taken on the men’s duties, including their mentalities. In more recent times, policymakers see women as giving a softer image for police, especially with better communication skills that can de-escalate tense situations. Unfortunately, that hasn’t been the case as women officers are often even more unsympathetic to victims, seeing them as being weak.
Why are women uninterested in police work? What can departments do to attract these types of women? Will this even make any impact on policing?
