Each year, a growing number of high school graduates are choosing to take a year off before going to college. The idea of this kind of “gap year” has been the source of some debate. Research the pros and cons of the gap year. Then, write an essay in which you argue for or against taking a year off before college. Please note that this is not an assignment asking you to “report” on the topic. While you will conduct research in order to educate yourself about the pros and cons of a gap year, your paper should do much more than list them. The idea is to sift through what you learn in order to arrive at a thesis—your position on this issue—and then build a supporting argument using the sources you’ve selected. The more specifically you can focus your project and the sources you choose to incorporate, the better your paper will turn out. It will be especially important to adhere to the guidelines for persuasion and argument laid out by our textbook editors and discussed by us throughout the course. Your grade for this paper will be based on the depth and grace of your argument, as well as on more conventional criteria such as proper use of quotes, how well you work in outside source material, and how well you proof and edit the paper. Use at least five reliable sources (only one of which should be a website), and follow all the guidelines for MLA style. (We’ll discuss both of these further in class.)
