This paper asks you to provide answers to specific questions on EU studies material which requires that you conduct your own research. You will need to use academic sources for this just as if it were an essay. However, the answers you are required to provide to each question are far shorter than a normal essay; this is an exercise in conducting targeted research and condensing the knowledge you gain.
The questions focus on the issues covered in Term 1 of this module. Please answer five questions from the ten set out below, in no more than 500 words each (bibliographies should not be included in the word count). Sample answers, which provide an idea of the kind of answer required, are included after the list of questions. The questions do not necessarily ask you to provide a ‘right’ answer; rather, they ask you to provide a reasoned response based on the distillation of your research.
You will be marked based on the following criteria: 1) ability to answer the question, 2) command of the facts, 3) use of appropriate academic literature, 4) ability to reference that literature, 5) level of English.
You must cite the sources for your answers after each response and show that you have read widely. You should reference at least 3-4 academic sources in each answer. Credit will be given for the telling use of high-quality sources, especially if you have identified these yourselves rather than simply using those on the reading list. You can use textbooks but should also make use of some more advanced literature such as journal articles or monographs.
Wikipedia and other similar web-sites are not acceptable sources of information for this purpose. You must reference all your sources clearly using either the Harvard referencing system or footnotes, not a combination of both. Direct quotes must be identified as such. Failure to reference all your sources properly amounts to plagiarism, which is a serious academic offence that will not be tolerated.
