Art is constantly in dialogue with both its present and its past. Whether artists accept or reject the ideas of their predecessors and contemporaries, they are always in conversation with them. Drawing on both Western and non-Western works, discuss the ways in which artists have referred or reacted to art’s history. What are the key moments, in your analysis, of earlier works, styles and/or techniques influencing, being incorporated into or otherwise fueling new artworks? In each of the examples you choose, how is past art both invoked and altered? How are these inclusions and changes used to enhance the meaning or function of the artwork in its present? NOTE: You may refer to work covered in the first half of the semester, but your answer should focus on works related to the periods, cultures and regions studied since the midterm.
