In order to earn the maximum points for the assignment, scholars will submit a paper that: Considers an issue relevant to the course. Identifies at least six examples of primary sources (generally speaking, primary sources are letters, diaries, and other publications written by participants or witnesses to events.) related to the issue. The documents in the Stoler and Gustafson book are primary sources. Additional primary sources can be found in the databases available through the Columbia College Stafford Library and the Links area of the course homepage. Constructs a thesis statement. Consults a number of additional secondary sources to develop a thesis. (Secondary sources include books, journal articles, etc. written about a topic by scholars who use primary sources and the works of other scholars.) Incorporates an introduction, body, and conclusion. Organizes paragraphs with approximately eight sentences developing a single topic. Elaborates major points with a degree of specificity. Clarifies premises using coherent diction. Avoids spelling errors, awkward language, improper grammar, flawed punctuation, and other technical mistakes. Includes at least ten pages of full typed text (not counting cover page or bibliography) circumscribed by one inch margins, making each double spaced page approximately 250 words and 25-27 lines with a standard type 12 point font. Uses the Chicago Style documentation style guide consistently and correctly. Rampolla’a A Pocket Guide to Writing History should be used extensively. Use the numerical footnote / bibliography style of documentation described by Rampolla, not the abbreviated parenthetical model imbedded in the text.
