What are we asking you to do? We ask that each group give a 15-minute presentation on an aspect of popular culture. In order to ensure that your topic interests you, considerable latitude will be given in the topic selection. This is a two-part project, consisting of individual research and a group presentation. Why are we asking you to do this? Research suggests that teaching others is an extremely effective path to learning and retention (far more effective than such conventional avenues as lecture or tests). Part 1: Preliminary Research Project (up to 150 points) Individually, each group member will submit a 1000-word research paper on her/his part of the presentation. In crafting your research, please follow this sectional format: Section 1: Statement of purpose. How does your subtopic connect with your group’s main topic? Why is this important? Section 2: Research findings. This main body of the paper is where you gather and discuss your research. As with all MDIA 11 submissions, this must be entirely in your own words, and please remember to cite at least 2 outside sources. Section 3: Summary paragraph. In this concluding section, please summarize the most important points (i.e., the information that you will include in your part of the oral presentation). Your submission will be evaluated according to the following rubric: Word Count 1000+ = 40 900-999 = 30 800-899 = 20 700-799 = 10 Critical thinking Excellent = 65 Good = 50 Fair = 35 Poor = 25 Spelling/Grammar Excellent = 25 Good = 20 Fair = 15 Poor = 5 Cited sources 2 sources = 10 1 source = 5 No sources = 0 Summary Excellent =10 Good = 7 Fair = 5 No summary = 0
