What role did the environment play into the development of Native American tactics and technology? What were the aims and goals of Indian warfare? How did both Native and European tactics evolve? • Examine the technology and tactics of the European colonists and their effectiveness in the New World environment. • Discuss/analyze the differences and effectiveness of the “matchlock” and “flintlock” muskets of the colonists. If you were an early colonist which weapon would you prefer, why? Which did the Indians prefer? Colonists? Pros and Cons concerning both weapons. • How did tactics (both Indian and European) evolve, or did they, with contact between the European settlers and the Native Americans? • Discuss the tactics of “Total Warfare” used by the colonial settlers and its effects on Indian warfare. Who was the barbarian? • Were Indian tactics “barbarian,” or a natural development given the Natives habitat, aims and goals of warfare? • Identify tactics and technology of Native Americans that colonists would later adopt as well as tactics and technology from Europe that the Indians would adopt. Analyze the effectiveness from these warfare exchanges of tactics and technology. • Finally, consider the future impact of those exchanges in the later War for American Independence, if any.
