Viewing a Television Show: The two shows to be watched are : The King of Queens ; “Season 3 Episodes 21” Departure Time and “episode 22” Swim Neighbors As you watch, take extensive notes about how gender is depicted in the show. Consider the readings on gender and stereotypes as you do so. Imagine that the show’s creators are making claims, arguments, and sending messages about different gender roles in the American family. Consider the following questions as you proceed; these may jump start your critical analysis of the show. Think of these questions as different ways to approach figuring out a thesis. Hopefully one or more of these questions will guide you as you view your program, helping you to understand what might be the messages about gender that the show is sending? What is ASSUMED to be NORMAL and TAKEN FOR GRANTED for women/men in their different roles in the show you chose? Are the characters represented in a traditional or non-traditional way for their gender? Do the characters break from traditional gender roles? How is the characters’ gender important or not important to the roles they play? For example, if the gender roles were switched, how would it change the show? What do you see male and female characters doing or saying that reminds you of what you read? Consider the appearance of male and female characters…How does what they look like (or how they dress) affect your impression of these characters? What do your characters value? How do the values differ for men and women on the show? Do the characters’ gender roles heighten the drama, or create funny moments? What do you make of that? If your show is long running, how do the characters change over time? What do you think that means? MOST IMPORTANTLY:In what ways do these characters conform to the gender stereotypes described in your reading, and in what ways do they challenge them? Assignment 1: Outline for TV Show Analysis: Directions Write a detailed sentence outline for an analytical essay using information from your notes on the TV show you watched and from discussion in the TV Show Discussion Forum. Please review the information on Outlines in General Resources in Unit and General Resources link. Make sure you use MLA format. (All your papers must use this format.) This outline is a close analysis that will use specific supporting examples from the episodes you watched. You may also include quotes or paraphrases from the selected readings, as long as you cite them correctly. Note: I will not accept general summaries of the shows. Your sentence outline should: Have a clear introduction, body and conclusion Include the titles of the shows and the episodes (accurately cited according to MLA) (Note: show titles are underlined or italicized and episodes are within quotation marks) Include a clear thesis statement in the Introduction (See sample thesis statement above). Topic sentences for each body paragraph that make arguments that support the thesis Provide, under the topic sentence, specific supporting examples from the episodes (and, optionally, quotes/paraphrases from the readings) Include a conclusion that is related to the thesis Assignment 2: TV Show Analysis Essay: You must complete this assignment no later than Sunday, February 21st by 11:59pm.
