Annotated Resource List Library Skills Component Assignment Purpose: This assignment will provide students with the proper strategy for conducting a research project including choosing a topic, seeking and locating information and producing an annotated resource list. However, this project will not include an actual written paper. Students will gain valuable experience by locating and evaluating information relevant to their chosen topic. Instructions: TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) began as a non-profit conference in 1984 that has grown to include two annual national conferences, an annual global conference and an award-winning website (ted.com). TED Talks are the product of these conferences and can be described as “Ideas Worth Spreading.” TED Talks are featured on the website having been recorded at the conferences as well as created daily by some rather big thinkers. Some of the most popular and powerful TED Talks come from leaders in technology, journalism, energy, sports and entertainment. The TED website provides on-demand access to every TED Talk video ever created with a powerful search engine and helpful tag index. Students will choose one TED Talk, watch it and then create an Annotated Resource List based on the ideas and topics presented within the Talk. Once you have chosen a TED Talk, you can begin your research. First, devise several search terms and/or phrases relevant to your chosen Talk and use these search terms to locate books, scholarly journal articles, reference materials and Internet resources. Utilize Topcat, Online Databases, Reference Materials and the Internet to locate sources. Review the Library Skills Blackboard site to learn about different citation styles and choose one citation format (MLA, APA, Chicago Manual Style, etc.) for the annotated bibliography portion of the assignment. The Library Skills Blackboard site will also include a section that describes the requirements of an annotated bibliography. This assignment will include the following sections: 1. TED Talk Title and Brief Description – Simply state your chosen TED Talk and its author and provide a brief description (1-2 paragraphs) including some general information learned while watching the video and conducting your research. (See the Grading Rubric for scoring details.) 2. Annotated Resource List – A minimum of six (6) sources are required for the Annotated Resource List. Each of the following source examples must be represented in your resource list: Book, Scholarly Journal Article, Reference Source (Encyclopedia, etc.), Internet Source. The remaining two sources are your choice. (See the Grading Rubric for scoring details.) Projects must be typewritten in 12 point font, be free of grammatical errors and organized following the specifications above. Students will submit their projects using Blackboard. This assignment is worth 70 points towards a possible 100 points for the Library Skills Component. Once you have completed your project, you will be required to submit this assignment through the Library Skills Blackboard site.
