Communication in a multicultural world. Many countries are now identifying themselves as multicultural. What is evident is that communicating effectively across cultures is no simple task, whether in a country such as Canada, or internationally. The Internet and associated technologies have led to businesses communicating across borders to buy and sell products and services, which means they have to be able to do so with a sense of cultural sensitivity if they want to be successful. While language is still one of the predominant barriers to effective communication, there are other, equally challenging barriers to effective cross-cultural communication, both within a country, and internationally. Understanding what these barriers are, and how to either overcome or work with them for successful, meaningful communication, is becoming increasingly important to communication professionals. Please pair up, select a topic in which you are interested, and then prepare and post a PPT – or Prezi – presentation that identifies a cross-cultural communications public relations or advertising campaign that has been specifically targeted to a particular cultural group or addressed a specific cultural issue. It doesn’tât matter if the campaign was a success. Themes to be discussed in the presentation include, but are not limited to: How do we define culture? How are diverse cultures accommodated in a society? An example from history that can help us learn what to do and what to avoid in terms of communicating across cultures. How can communication mistakes be minimized? The role, if any, of social media in the campaign. The presentation should include enough slides to cover a 10 to 15 minute presentation, although there is no presentation component in this assignment.
