Research Paper (30% of your course grade): This course requires the student to prepare and submit during week 07 a Research Paper on EFFECTIVE LEADERS OF ORGANIZATIONS. Student should remember that the nature of the class is LEADERSHIP and the focus of the paper should revolve around this theme. Papers that do not address this topic, but focus instead on other important, but irrelevant MANAGEMENT issues will not grade well. The paper should have 06-08 pages of content and prepared using APA 6th Edition standards. Writing should show college level work. Don’t forget the basics; spelling, grammar, and format. • RESEARCH PAPERS are due on the 07th week (shown on the Course Schedule). Here is the outline for this alternative LSA Situational Reflection Paper: 1. Motivation- What do you consider to be your best motivational tool for your staff, and why. 2. Ethics- You have just returned from a meeting with your senior management. At this session you were informed of a pending staffing reduction of 10% that will go into effect in two weeks. You were told not to mention this to anyone. You have your weekly meeting with your full staff in a few hours. Rumors have been in the air about a staffing reduction for some time. You expect to have a question of staffing reduction come up at your staff meeting. How would you respond to that question? Remember, there is a potential ethical issue at stake her. 3. Goal of a Leader- What do you think is the most strategic goal most leaders have, and why? Only one goal is allowed. 4. Coercive Power- You have just taken over a unit that has a coercive leader reporting to you. How would you handle this person, and why? 5. Delegating Leadership Style- Much as been made about leaders needing to have a delegating style. You have read about this style in your text book. Delegating is not about the normal 9-5 work we are all responsible for, but rather something above and beyond the normal requirements. Delegating can be either dumping or empowerment. How would you empower a staff member in your organization? 6. The New Leader in Town- You just were given a new leadership position over an organization you have some indirect knowledge of, but not direct involvement over the past few years. What would you do in the first week and in the first month of your new leadership position? 7. The Proverbial Task- Relationship Debate- Several of you have said you were more task than relationship, and vice versa. Others were surprised at the results measuring your task vs. relationship skills. I have mentioned that I believe you need a high balance between the two styles. Do you agree with this statement or not, and why? 8. Self-Leadership Improvements- What is the one leadership trait you will work on moving forward, and why? 9. Communications as a Leader- How would you evaluate your leadership skills as a communicator, and why? 10. Overall MGMT 371 Evaluation- How would you analyze this course in terms of helping you to acknowledge who you are as a leader and what you may want to do as a leader in the future.
