Persimmons & Cherrylog Road

Context- The critical context is analysis of two poems whose poetic voices offer portraits of individuals deeply tied to specific cultural landscape. Your reading of the poem keeps that knowledge at its forefront.

The Question/Task- Your essay will use its close reading of Lee’s Persimmons and Dickey’s Cherrylog Road to argue how each poems develops two specific but related themes for each.(For example, two thematic insights connected to the power of memory). The essay will have an introduction where the poems’ cultural context is described as are its denoted and connoted content(an overview). This richly specific overview leads to sentences that state the essays themes/thesis. Your essay will interpret each poem separately, thus your essay will have six body paragraphs that will develop two properly supported and interpretatively insightful arguments (these interpretations MUST use interpolation as their principle interpretative method). The conclusion will very briefly summarize the essays’ insights.

The Essay- Your essay must present a clear, developed reading and its own coherent analysis to argue for its interpretation of these poems and the development of two related themes in each poem. It is NOT sufficient to advance a broad reading of the poems. You need to present both a particularly focused reading and use that reading and the technique of interpolation to develop your argument.

Writing Concerns to Remember-
Use the simple present tense and active voice
This is not an autobiography or a manifesto. Use the third person position of address
No "seems, maybe" or "all, every" claims.
Have an argument, a thesis and use Statements of Argument to introduce every body paragraph.
Avoid passive voice; rhetorical questions and hypothetical arguments.
Be specific, use evidence that the poem presents.
No reference to "talk," this is writing.
Use appropriate formulations to refer to the poem, its images and structures (i.e., no reference to authorial intention or reader response.)
Carefully PROOFREAD.

Introduction should introduce both poems. Do one poem and then the other. First three paragraphs is the first poem and the next three is the second poem and a brief summary for paragraph 7. This is NOT a compare and contrast essay. And this essay MUST have two specific related themes for each poem. Also talk about their culture.
