This week’s Discussion starts with the following basic information: You are a counselor providing counseling to a same-sex couple. The partners within that couple are parents to two children, ages 6 and 3. Beyond this basic information, you are asked to speculate how additional details might influence this couple’s experience of parenting. In your response, consider different possible aspects of their lives as parents, including how parenting may influence their couple relationship, what connections the family may have to other members of the local community, and how the parents might interact with and experience institutions related to their parenting experiences (e.g., schools, child care, health care providers, and mental health professionals).
To prepare for this Discussion, select two pairs of demographic differences from the following list: urban/rural, interracial/same race, one stay-at-home parent/dual career, higher/lower socioeconomic status, residency in a state where a legal union is possible/residency in a state where a legal union is not possible, secular/religious. Consider how the same-sex couples’ parenting experiences might differ between each side of the categories you selected.
With these thoughts in mind:

Explain how the couple’s relationship and their parenting experiences might differ between each side of the categories you selected. For example, if you chose urban/rural as one of your categories, explain how the experiences would differ if the couple lived in an urban area or if they lived in a rural area. Finally, explain how your counseling approach might differ based on the different experiences of the couple.

I think the discussion this week is complex, and will require some researching, contemplation, and critical thinking from each of you. Exciting! As you contemplate same sex parenting, I think it is important to consider the various levels of challenges the couple might experience as they work to raise their children. Not only will the couple experience the same discord a heterosexual couple would experience when it comes to parenting, they also must manage the potential scrutiny and societal difficulty that might emerge due to their relationship.
In this week’s discussion, I’d like for each of you to think about how to complete this case study information. The information given is intentionally vague so that we might have a variety of different scenarios to consider. You are asked to speculate how additional details would influence this couple’s parenting experience. Be sure to include two pairs of demographic differences from the list provided and use those to help you consider how parenting experiences might differ between the two ends of the continuum of the categories you selected (select two categories, for example, I might select interracial/same race and secular/religious as my two categories to explore.)
