Literature Review You are required to prepare a literature review on the Public Perceptions of the Youth Drug Court. You should reference 30 sources [research studies (empirical research) + supporting literature]. 23 journal articles (empirical research) + 7 other sources (government reports, media reports, books, journal articles). Structure: 1. Introduction • Set the context (drugs and crime, why do people do drugs?, etc.) • Establish your standpoint in reviewing the literature • Point out overall trends in the literature • Describe the sequence/organisation of the review • Define the scope of the review (what is/is not included and why) 2. Body • Group and sequence the literature according to the main themes/ideas/ components of your argument • Main themes/points [drug use & drug crime, youth crime, treatment/rehabilitation/sentencing, diversionary justice, problem solving courts, drug courts (look internationally, Australia and then Western Australia), public perceptions] – notice how it is broad and narrows down to the research question “Public Perceptions of the Youth Drug Court” • Summarise the works appropriately (length tends to equate to significance; cover methods and results) • Critically evaluate the works (assess fairly the strengths, weaknesses, significance, contribution, flaws and limitations (etc.) of individual works & whole lines of inquiry) • For each group of literature, provide concluding statements & link/relate to the next group 3. Conclusion • Provide a synthesis of the issues and conclusions highlighted in your review (consistent with the structure of your argument) • Reiterate the major flaws, gaps or troublesome issues in the literature • Draw together the threads of your argument to provide a coherent justification and rationale for your study (The purpose of the literature review is to find the ‘gaps’ in the research in order to justify why you need to conduct research in this area.)
