Case Study 2 Saul is 6 years old. He lives with his mum and 14-year-old brother in a small, damp, housing association flat in London. His mum works as a nurse, and often leaves Saul alone with his brother overnight or during the evening. Saul attends a mainstream primary school but is having difficulty settling down for formal lessons and remaining in the classroom. He has few friends, and does not like to interact with others very much. His speech is delayed and he speaks in shorter sentences than his classmates- many of whom find it difficult to understand him. His school tell Saul’s mum that they are meeting his needs, but that he is disruptive and badly behaved. Saul’s mum wants him to undergo an assessment from the local authority because she suspects he may have a developmental disability or an attention disorder, but the school think that he needs more discipline at home. Saul qualifies for free school meals, but is particular about what he eats, and often goes back to the classroom hungry. Saul’s mum has confided in a classroom assistant that the family struggle for money, and that she borrows money from friends to buy essentials for her family.
