Research, prepare and present oral evidence to a simulated Commission of Inquiry into family violence in NSW. The Premier has appointed a Commission of Inquiry into Family Violence in NSW to build a comprehensive picture of the scope and impact of Family Violence in NSW. The commissioners have called for submissions from those with an interest in and/or experience in Family violence, including victims, survivors or family members, service providers, cultural leaders, academic researchers and activist organisations, to present evidence to this inquiry and share their professional insights Choosing the specific issue/topic THE LEGAL SYSTEM AND FAMILY VIOLENCE and assume the role of an expert for giving evidence on this topic As an expert their is an assumption that your presentation will demonstrate an in-depth and well-supported understanding of the topic These are some guiding elements of whet you may think about when structuring your oral submission INTRODUCTION TO THE ISSUE *Who is affected and how *The prevalence or cost of the issue to individuals and society *Cultural and systemic practises which perpetuate the issue *Discussion of current policies, laws, practises or strategies surrounding the issue *The effectiveness of these policies, laws and practises The principles underpinning this inquiry are founded upon those of the 2014 ‘Not now, Not ever’ Putting an end to Family Violence in Queensland Inquiry. The submission must consider the following terms of reference ACCOUNTABILITY- ensuring that the response from police, prosecution teams, community and courts provide an effective response to domestic and family violence, to send a clear message to perpetrators that committing violence is not acceptable, and holding them accountable BUILDING ON CURRNT STRATEGIES- supporting, building, complementing and improving systems and processes to provide greater protection to provide greater protection EARLY INTERVENTION- policies and procedures that ensure that those who are at the greatest risk are identified to ensure action is taken to protect them and to modify the attitudes and behaviours of perpetrators You are requires to present a 20 minute oral presentation to a formal hearing of a simulated NSW Domestic Family Violence Task Force. drawing on a range of critically analysed academic and primary sources demonstrating a solid understanding of the complexities surrounding family violence in relation to the legal system. Presenters must submit a one page summary covering the main points made throughout the presentation along with the power point presentation including a reference list
