For this project you need to write a paper of 5 to 6 pages (double-spaced, font 12) that describes and analyzes the grammar mistakes in the speech of a non-native speaker. You need to select a non-native speaker of English (preferably somebody who is not fluent in English) and meet with him/her several times to establish a conversation that help you identify some grammatical mistakes that this person makes. Persistent mistakes in the language of a non-native speaker are called errors.
In the first part of the paper you should provide some information on the language background of the non-native speaker and the way in which he/she has learned English.
The second part should consist of examples of the grammar errors you have observed in context i.e. you should write phrases or sentences from the non-native speaker’s speech that you noticed to contain grammar errors.
In the third part you should talk about the specific grammar characteristics of the grammatical structures that the non- native speaker has trouble with. You should compare and contrast the grammar structure in the native and target languages. You can ask the student to provide information about their native language grammar or you can find such information in grammar books for that language. For example, if you have noticed that a Russian speaker makes a lot of mistakes in the use of the English articles (the use of “the†and “aâ€) you should ask them to explain how this category is expressed in Russian. In some cases there might not be a corresponding category in the native language of the speaker. However, there is always a different way to express the same grammatical category. You should describe it to the best of your understanding.
In the last part of the paper you should analyze the non-native speaker’s mistakes in light of what you have learned about the grammar of their native language i.e. you should focus on the native language interference. Finally, provide some exercises or suggestions for teaching strategies to help the non-native speaker learn to use the grammatical structure correctly.
