Book Report

Book: Name of author(s). Title of Book. Place of Publication: Name of Publisher, Year of Publication. Number of Pages. Chapter in the textbook (Hunt, Making of the West) that lists the book.

Thesis: Write 3-5 sentences explaining the main points of the book. You should describe the subject of the book, but also explain what the author(s) think is most important about the subject. It might be useful to think about causes and definitions of the events mentioned in the title of the book, and to answer the questions “why?” and/or “how?” in your statement.

Purpose: Write 2-4 sentences explaining why the author(s) wrote this particular book. Are there other other books on the same subject and if so how is this one different?

Evidence: Summarize the evidence used in the book to support its thesis. Select and explain 3-5 pieces of evidence. This will be the longest section of your report and should consist of 3-5 paragraphs. The use of direct quotations from the book is a good way to present strong evidence, but be sure to explain the quotations used. Quotes that are longer than 40 words should be single spaced and double indented.

Evaluation: Explain what you learned from reading the book. Did the book confirm, expand and/or contradict things that you already knew about its subject. Include your opinion of the book. This section should consist of 3-6 sentences.
