– Falls is always a problem in the hospital setting. Safety precautions can be an issue for anyone but is more of a problem for the elderly or the confused. Gender and ethnicity does not matter. Diagnoses often include, cognitive impairment, gait or balance impairment, multiple chronic conditions, and previous falls.
I – There are quite a few interventions that can help lower incidents of falls. To name a few: bed alarms, chair alarms, hourly rounding with bathroom assists, wait for the patient while they are in the bathroom, and call bells always within reach.
C – Bed alarms are probably the most common intervention to help prevent falls. Comparison interventions are things like hourly rounding with bath room assists, waiting for the patient right outside the bathroom door and walk them back to their bed, and utilizing PRN medications for patients with cognitive impairment.
O – In my hospital, we keep a monthly score of how many falls were on the floor. The lower the better. I am hoping to accomplish that we have no falls. It is inevitable that falls will happen, but with the help of the whole staff working cohesively, I believe that we can greatly minimize the fall percentage.
I developed this question because safety precaution is one of the most important things for me to keep in mind every time I work. This is important in my clinical setting because especially for the elderly, which my floor has plenty of, sometimes just one fall could mean the end of a patient’s life.
