Pick another historical figure, real or legendary, who is different from your team’s choice. You may also write on an institution such as hwarang (“flower boys” of Silla), or an event such as the Imjin Wars of 1592. Gather information from class materials and at least two additional scholarly writings (chapters of books and/or articles), and find an example of the representation of the figure in a popular culture product (a film, a TV drama, a novel, a comic, webtoon, a children’s book, etc.).* Then 1) write a short biographical account of the person, including background information on the period’s politics, culture, and society, and the status group and gender s/he belonged to; 2) discuss what aspects of the person’s life history are actively remembered and celebrated and why; 3) explain whether the portrayal of the person you find in the popular culture product of your choice can be backed up by historical evidence; and 4) end with a comment on the influence of popular culture on historical memory.
*You may opt to write an essay on your chosen topic without engaging a popular culture product. In that case, be sure to formulate a significant research question of your own about the topic. Your essay should be focused on the resolution of a problem of historical interpretation, and should be organized around arguments that are supported by facts. Instead of a popular culture product, you need to use material from at least two primary sources, in addition to the requirement of two additional scholarly writings.
