Assignments: In the Drop Box submit an essay in which you do two things: describe and comment on two anthologies of poetry for children and describe and comment on three to five poems.

The Essay (800–1200 words)
Before you write your essay, find two anthologies of poetry for children. (An anthology is a collection of works by different authors.) You can find anthologies in bookstores or libraries. Begin your essay by explaining which of your two anthologies you prefer and why. Compare and contrast them. Then tell which is better and why.
Then from the anthology you choose, tell about three to five poems. The discuss at least one nonsense poem, one serious poem, and one visual poem. What is appealing about them? What do you like about them? What do children like about them?
1. Introduce each poem in a sentence by author and title.
2. Describe each poem physically. How many stanzas? Is it rhymed? How? If it is not rhymed, is it blank verse (regular, predictable line lengths) or free verse (no regular or predictable line lengths).
3. Then tell what the poem is about, including theme and subject.
4. Finally, tell what there is to like. Notice any tropes, word play, puns, oxymorons, onomatopoeia, irony, humor, fun rhymes, or striking images.
