Messianic Psalms

Messianic Psalms

On this topic, you need to explain WHY a particular psalm is messianic (what are the criteria?). The word mashiach (“messiah”) is actually used in only TWO psalms of an eschatological figure, so you need to figure out what a NT author was thinking when he referenced a psalm as having something to do with Messiah.

This is not to be a theology paper about Jesus. It’s about what a first century (pre-Jesus) Jew was thinking in terms of messianic expectation and how he saw Jesus as meeting that expectation.”

That is, this topic is about how Jews *before Jesus* thought about messiah and how the psalms were part of that thinking. By definition it isn’t a paper about Jesus. You need to do research on messianic expectations before Jesus. Sources like the Dead Sea Scrolls deal with that a lot. You need sources from the Second Temple period (Intertestamental) about messianism to get a messianic profile – then take that to the psalms to see how they contribute to that profile.
