Adolescence psychology

INSTRUCTIONS: Your paper should be 3-4 pages in length. The format is Times New Roman, 12-point font, and double spaced. If you include any references, they should be listed both in-text and on a separate references page in APA format. You do not need to include a cover page or abstract. If you have a title or header, it should be no longer than 2 double-spaced lines. PROMPT: The two fundamental changes between childhood and adolescence are the physical changes of puberty and the transition from concrete operational thinking to the beginning of formal operational thought. Changes in all other aspects of a person’s existence during adolescence are highly dependent upon these two changes. The characteristics of adolescence as we know it reflect the fact that these two changes tend to occur at roughly the same time. But what if these two changes were widely separated in time? Discuss what the period we now call adolescence would be like in the following two situations: a. Physical puberty occurred as it now does, but the development of formal operational thinking did not begin until ages 18 to 20. b. Intellectual change began as they now do at 11 or 12, but puberty did not begin until 18 to 20. Assume that the timing of the changes is typical for all adolescents, and that it has occurred in the same way for several generations. You may want to consider gender differences, emotional consequences, peer relationships, families, schools, and so forth.
