The novel I have chosen is At Fault, by Kate Chopin.
Here are the instructions:
At the top of the essay state the name of the novel and the character you are writing about.
Course Project Description: For your project, you should choose a character from the novel you have read. Explain what makes that character uniquely American. Please feel free to think outside the box. There are characters within these novels that may not be legally or technically American but are tremendous examples of the American spirit. This gives you a lot of opportunity to really explore a character that interests you.
You will need to incorporate many aspects of the novel to prove your case. Be sure to look at issues such as imagery, dialect, social and cultural influences, and point of view, among others.
1. The essay is not a summary of the book. It is an examination of what it means to be American using one of the characters of the book to support your points. In other words, the emphasis of the essay is the traits that make your character uniquely American or embody the American Spirit.
2. Begin by making a list of traits that make someone uniquely American. You may need to do some research for this. Support your claim with some research and/or definition of each trait you have chosen.
3. Then incorporate the novel character into each trait you are discussing.
There must be an introduction, body, and conclusion. The introduction serves to gain the readers’ attention and state the thesis. The thesis needs to be stated as the last sentence of the first paragraph and should include the traits that will be discussed in the essay. EXAMPLE OF THESIS STATEMENT: In the book, This Side of Paradise, Amory Blaine possess the traits of independence, ambition, hard-working, and selfishness, which makes him uniquely American.
Then in the body of the essay discuss each trait in a separate paragraphs. There needs to be transitions between each paragraph to tie the essay together. There also needs to be properly formatted MLA In-text Citations.
The conclusion will summarize the essay and restate the thesis. The conclusion will not include any new information. If it has not been discussed in the essay it does not belong in the conclusion.
Include a properly formatted MLA Works Cited page.
Your essays should be in MLA Style and approximately 5-6 pages, not including the Work(s) Cited page. As with most academic writing, this essay should be written in third person. Please avoid both first person (I, we, our, etc.) and second person (you, your).
In the upper left-hand corner of the paper, place your name, the professor’s name, the course name, and the due date for the assignment on consecutive lines. Double space your information from your name onward, and don’t forget a title. All papers should be in Verdana font with 12-point type with one-inch margins all the way around your paper. All paragraph indentations should be indented five spaces (use the tab key) from the left margin. All work is to be left justified. When quoting lines in literature, please research the proper way to cite short stories, plays, or poems.
You should use the online APUS library to look for scholarly sources. Be careful that you don’t create a “cut and paste” paper of information from your various sources. Your ideas are to be new and freshly constructed. Also, take great care not to plagiarize.
