Reflect on the Saint Leo Core Value of Personal Development. What impediments to personal development do criminal and immoral acts cause against individuals? What impediments to personal development do criminal and immoral acts cause against societal development?
Personal Development. Saint Leo University stresses the development of every person’s mind, spirit, and body for a balanced life. All members of the Saint Leo University community must demonstrate their commitment to personal development to help strengthen the character of our community.
The Saint Leo Core Value of Personal Development gives a vague definition of mind, body and spirit based on a religious university definition. The impediments to personal development against individuals who have been immorally or criminally acted upon differ from person to person. This is a tough question to answer because everyone may have their own opinion of mind, body and spirit as it applies to their balanced life, it is not the same for others when you break it down. What does spirit mean to each of us? I believe my spiritual development for a balanced life stems from being born again and believing Jesus Christ is my personal savior. That may not be the same for others. But as that applies to criminal and immoral acts upon individuals it can change a person for the better or worse. Strength of forgiveness is the foundation for healing and moving on. I can say what development of spirit is for me, prayer, attending church, and helping others in the community who have less, but it can and probably does have a different meaning to others. Spiritual development can mean meditating, believing in a higher power (not knowing what the higher power is) or a variety of other beliefs. When you discuss the impediments to body, criminal acts can physically alter a person and when we discuss the mind it can cause serious trust issues and other mental incapacity that is too varied to describe. Again, this is individual and it will likely have numerous descriptions.
Needless to say criminal and immoral acts do affect and change society. It changes the way we think, act and how our laws are determined. I think once you have experienced a criminal or an immoral act, distrust is at the forefront of the way we conduct ourselves individually and as a society. Those acts take away the innocence of believing there is good in all things and suddenly your world is shattered. Only through faith and belief in God does believing in people who commit these acts make it possible again. And that takes a lot of time and prayer!

What impediments to personal development do criminal and immoral acts cause against individuals?
– I believe that if you don’t learn simple right from wrong at a young age, you most likely never will. OR it will take an extreme event ranging from going to prison or finding jesus (or whoever your deity is) in order for you to change your ways. Once you start down the wrong path, you’re probably going to stay on it. Things are easier to learn when we’re young and the lessons get harder as we age.
What impediments to personal development do criminal and immoral acts cause against societal development?
This one feels slightly easier to comprehend. Criminal behavior has a ripple effect. It does erode societies. It weakens our feelings of safety in our everyday surroundings. Will I get car-jacked today? Will the convenience store I’m in get robbed? Everyone has their own opinion of what is morally right and wrong, but for the most part we all agree on the major issues; murder, rape etc. will not be tolerated. We are growing as a nation/society and many, many things (laws) are open for constant revision as we progress.
I preface this next statement with “In no way, shape or form do I mean to offend anyone that is religious.” As someone that doesn’t believe in any religion/deity/high power etc., I can understand why others choose to do so and if that’s what guides them, then so be it. If you’re feel better or you’re happier because you pray and go to church, then by all means pray and go to church. Happier people will make a happier society. Happiness is contagious (except for grumpy cat, he’s obviously never happy). However, I don’t think that it should have any bearing on how we decide and create laws. The nation may have been founded on some religious principles, but that was 200+ years ago. We’re not the same nation as we were in 1776.
On another note, just throwing this out there for anyone to contemplate…depending on which website you read/trust, there are anywhere from 500k to 900k sworn officers in the U.S. If everyone did the right thing all the time, would we still need these officers? And if we didn’t need them, then we have that many more people looking for work in an already high unemployment rate nation. Food for thought. Great posts all around everyone! Very interesting perspectives! Thanks.
