Critically examine what the security manager can do to prevent white collar crime

Guidance White collar crime can vary in its definitions so ensure that you critically consider this in your response to this essay question. It is permissible to concentrate on one or two types of white collar crime or to relate this question to a particular type of organisation in order to give some focus to your essay. Appreciate that this question requires an appraised discussion on white collar crime and an examination of preventative measures, which will require consideration of both theoretical perspectives and their application in terms of crime prevention.

Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art: The cultural critic Tony Bennett has said that museums do not arrange objects so much as they arrange the relationships between things and the people that come to view those things

The cultural critic Tony Bennett has said that museums do not arrange objects so much as they arrange the relationships between things and the people that come to view those things. Considering Bennett’s assertion, this worksheet is designed for you to think critically and objectively about

what a museum actually is and what it actually does. In this case, the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art. We are extremely fortunate to have an

institution of the quality of the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art on the USU campus. We are equally fortunate to have staff of such high quality

and expertise to run it. You should take advantage of their expertise and experience not only for the purposes of this exercise but throughout your

time at USU. Museums – and art museums are no exception – are in many the ways the cornerstones of culture: they determine knowledge; they identify

what is appropriate and legitimate for archiving; they function as repositories for history. But it is important to keep in mind that these are not

random or neutral processes. There are always ideological (as well as spatial, financial, historical, cultural etc.) implications in deciding what

should saved, archived, protected, and exhibited. In this sense, we are revealed by both the things we save and the things we throw away. Museums do

not only reflect, but also define who we are.

The worksheet is designed to help you achieve the learning objectives for the course by allowing you to identify different styles and periods as you

analyze and critically evaluate the exhibitions and work that is held by the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art. As you respond to the questions and

issues raised try and keep in mind the ways in which visual art is always the creative expression of a living dynamic culture. Keep in mind also

that in order to answer the questions as fully as possible it is necessary for you to undertake some independent research around the issues raised.

Please answer/respond to all of the following questions and issues. They all relate to the Crafting a Continuum: Rethinking Contemporary Craft

exhibition located in the Upper Gallery.

1. How are we directed around and through the space of the museum? How does the available space determine how and what we might see?

2. There is a great diversity of objects in the Crafting a Continuum show – sculpture, ceramics, furniture etc. – and on display in the museum generally. What sorts of considerations must curators take into account when they are arranging objects for a show such as this?

3. Historically there has been a distinction made between “art” and “craft”? What is this distinction? How are art and craft defined differently and

in what ways does an exhibition such as Crafting a Continuum challenge those traditional definitions?

4. Is it possible for functional objects to also be art?

5. To what extent is the didactic information presented along with the displays useful to gaining a broader understanding of the work? How would you

respond to the argument that an object should ‘stand alone’ and that if it needs explanation it has somehow ‘failed’ in its mission?

6. Select three pieces on display in the Crafting a Continuum show. First describe, compare and contrast the three pieces. You should then

critically analyze the pieces and explain why you find them particularly compelling.

Web Site Evaluation

This suppose to be a memo and I don’t see how many words its suppose to be or format. Not sure if I have selected the right Type of paper, number of

words, subject area or style. This is for a English class for Technical Writing.

English 235 OAS, OBS (1173, 1174)
Technical Writing
Spring 2015

Written Assignment 1: Web Site Evaluation

The Technical Writing Situation:

The use of typographical elements and visual page design is a characteristic of technical communication that distinguishes it from other kinds of writing (expository, narrative, essay). Chapter 7 (pp. 142 – 176) in your textbook is the support chapter for explaining the rules for Designing

Documents and Web Sites. In other words, the same page design rules are applied for presenting information in a written document or online in a Web

site.

“The design of a page or a screen can help a writer achieve many goals: to entertain, to amaze, to intrigue, to sell. In technical communication,

that goal is typically to help the reader accomplish a task (142).”

“The effectiveness of a document or Web site largely depends on how well it is designed, because readers see the document or site before they

actually read it. In less than a second, the document or site makes an impression on them, one that might determine how well they read it – or even

whether they decide to read it at all (143).”

The Goals of Document and Web Design:

• To make a good impression on readers

• To help readers understand the structure and hierarchy of information

• To help readers find the information they need

• To help readers understand the information

• To help readers remember the information

Assignment:

Start by reading Chapter 7 and understanding Learning Theory and the Design Principles explained in it before writing your evaluation. The chapter

explains how technical communication uses each of the design elements listed in your assignment. Explain how well your design element fulfills the

four major Design Principles: Proximity, Alignment, Repetition, and Contrast (see Chapter 7, pages 144-146).

Your assignment is based on Exercise 4, on page 176 of Chapter 7:

Find three web sites within a single industry, such as personal watercraft, cars, computers, colleges, or boat brokers. Study the three sites,

focusing on one of the following aspects of site design:

• use of color
• quality of the writing
• quality of the site map or index
• navigation, including the clarity and placement of links to other pages in the site
• accommodation of multicultural readers
• accommodation of people with disabilities
• phrasing of the links

While it is helpful to study the three sites to form your comparisons, you only need to write about the strongest Web site and the weakest.
Which of the three sites is most effective? Which is least effective? Why? Compare and contrast the two sites you have chosen in terms of their

effectiveness.

I have included links to two sample categories of Web sites (Boat Brokers, and Colleges/Universities) that you may choose to analyze, or choose your

own category and Web sites within it. If you choose your own Web sites, please be sure to imbed the links to the sites or screen shots of the sites

in your assignment, so that I can view them when grading your evaluation.

Format:

• Choose one design aspect to analyze, then write a short (about one page) memo to me explaining which Web site is the most effective, which is the

least effective, and why. Your goals in presenting technical information are to state it clearly, directly, and concisely, so focus on writing

clearly and supporting your analysis with specifics about the two Web sites.

• Begin with a short introductory paragraph (3-4 sentences) explaining your overall comparison of the Web sites, and why one is more effective than

the other.

• A good way to organize the body of your Memo would be to divide it into two sections, each that describes one Web site with its own heading: Most

Effective Site Design, Least Effective Site Design.

• Another possible organization would be to divide the body of your Memo by aspects of the page design element you are analyzing, such as looking at

the use of color by proximity, alignment, repetition, and contrast. The body of your Memo would be divided into four sections in which you compare

and contrast the most and least effective Web sites.

• You may start using standard technical writing conventions: short-medium length sentences; single-space between lines; double-space between

paragraphs; triple-space before and after major headings.

For guidelines about writing memos read Chap. 9, Writing Correspondence, in PSTC (pp.223-232). You may use a standard Memo template for the heading,

as long as it contains the four essential lines: To, From, Date, and Subject.

Critical Reflection

The two supplemental readings (one of them is a video with transcripts provided) this week argue that there is something wrong with the U.S.

Congress today. This week’s reflection has two parts.

First, summarize the arguments that Mann and Ornstein make regarding what is wrong with today’s Congress (they focus in particular on Congress since

2012 in their arguments) and why.

Second, how do the structure, rules, and roles of Congress as outlined in the Ginsberg text contribute to the problems that Mann and Ornstein have

identified?

Your essay should be posted online as a reply to this question. It should be supported with evidence from the readings, lectures, class discussions,

and any other sources that you find. Cite your sources.I will upload the video and the book later.

Organizational Structures – can significantly influence its operations

The structure of an organization determines how job tasks and the reporting system are organized. Clearly, changes to an organization’s structure can significantly influence its operations. What may be less apparent is the impact change can have on the organization’s culture.

In this week’s Discussion, you will analyze the structure of an organization, as well as any trends it may be experiencing and the external

pressures it faces.

To prepare for this Discussion:

• Review the Learning Resources this week.
• Consider the organization you currently work for or an organization where you previously worked.

post a comprehensive response to the following:

• Name the organization you chose and describe what it does.
• How is the organization structured (i.e., centralized versus decentralized)?
• How well do you think the organizational structure works? Please explain. Should the structure be changed? Please explain how and why.
• What are trends in the organization? In other words, how might the organization change in the future?
• What are the external pressures on the organization (i.e., health reform, economic pressures)?
• If possible, include an organizational chart of the organization with your Discussion post.
