““Loud, obnoxious, ghetto”, this was one of the first stereotypes of African Americans we hear about in the video. For the
most part we’ve all created cultural stereotypes about certain minority groups. Although stereotypes may have some truth
about an entire culture, it’s important not to extend generalizations to individuals. Individuals’ behaviors and attitudes
are impacted by factors other than culture. The dynamics that exist between ethnicity and social economic status means
“many low-SES adolescents are socialized differently from middle-class youths. They have their own manner of dress,
speech, and behavior. Those who seem loud, ill mannered, or aggressive are scorned by middle-class society.”(Pg. 59) The
video brings to life issues that minority adolescents are facing each day in our nation: creating a sense of identity
while facing a world with economic challenges, societal discrimination, and facing cross-cultural differences.
The subcultural groups discussed in this week’s chapter: African Americans, Latinos, and Native/ Asian Americans all
present the same salient struggle, economic hardships. Seeing that the dissolution of families as well as out-of wedlock
births are on the rise, it’s clear to see the financial impacts of these situations. Especially those homes left with
female parents as head of households. Notably, higher rates of adolescent pregnancies in minorities contribute to the
cycle of poverty and lack of education. For these reasons they’re more likely to suffer from stress and health problems
creating a sense of helplessness and instability. In the video these emotions are mirrored when the girls describe how
society perceives them, “we’re not viewed as smart we have to prove ourselves, they see us as ghetto girls.” Conversely,
other minorities such as Asian Americans have assimilated well due to their emphasis on higher education. As a whole
education has contributed to them enjoying a higher socioeconomic status. However, they are not exempt from
discrimination.
Secondly, societal discrimination is a prevalent problem that has affected minority adolescents. For example, the video
mentions the doll study conducted by Dr. Kenneth Clark after desegregation took place in the 1950’s and compared the
results from the same test made in recent times, and surprisingly they yielded the same results. 15 out of 20 black
children chose white dolls over black ones because they were perceived as, “nicer, and more beautiful.” The girls in the
video also echo the same standards of beauty as, “straight lighter hair over kinky hair, and lighter skin over dark.” Our
society has affected their perception of the socially acceptable standards of beauty.
Lastly, teens in sub cultural groups within our society struggle with cross cultural differences. For instance, the
African American girls in the video explained their frustration with their lack of cultural heritage. While the teens in
the Asian American adolescent video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPVYV92jGuI) in our module struggled with the
unyielding standards of education expected from them by their parents. Likewise, Latino’s culture of “emphasis on family
ties and dependency, submission to authority, living in the present, and politeness are not conducive to independence,
achievement, deferred gratification, and success.” (Pg. 69) Therefore, these adolescent must overcome poverty, and
discrimination to find a sense of identity in a middle ground between their culture and the host culture.”

You are a new associate at the law firm of Dewey, Chetum, and Howe. John, a former researcher at PharmaCARE, comes to your
office. He has concerns about PharmaCARE’s use of AD23, one of the company’s top-selling diabetes drugs. Two (2) years
ago, after PharmaCARE’s research indicated that AD23 might also slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease, John and his
team of pharmacists began reformulating the drug to maximize that effect. In order to avoid the Food and Drug
Administration’s (FDA) scrutiny, PharmaCARE established a wholly-owned subsidiary, CompCARE, to operate as a compounding
pharmacy to sell the new formulation to individuals on a prescription basis. CompCARE established itself in a suburban
office park near its parent’s headquarters. To conserve money and time, CompCARE did a quick, low-cost renovation.
CompCARE benefited from PharmaCARE’s reputation, databases, networks, and sales and marketing expertise, and within six
(6) months had the medical community buzzing about AD23. Demand soared, particularly among Medicare, Medicaid, and
Veterans Affairs patients. Seeing the opportunity to realize even more profit, CompCARE began advertising AD23 directly to
consumers and marketing the drug directly to hospitals, clinics, and physician offices, even though compounding pharmacies
are not permitted to sell drugs in bulk for general use. To circumvent this technicality, CompCARE encouraged doctors to
fax lists of fictitious patient names to CompCARE. PharmaCARE sold CompCARE to WellCo, a large drugstore chain, just weeks
before AD23 was publicly linked to over 200 cardiac deaths.
As CompCARE and its new parent company enjoyed record profits and PharmaCARE’s stock price approached $300 per share,
reports started surfacing that people who received AD23 seemed to be suffering heart attacks at an alarming rate. The
company ignored this data and continued filling large orders and paying huge bonuses to all the executives and managers,
including John, whose wife recently died from a heart attack after using AD23.
John has come to you with an internal company memo describing the potential problems with AD23, and information describing
the company’s willingness “roll the dice” and continue to market the drug.
Your senior partner has asked you to write a memo outlining the following issues for review by the senior partners.
In preparation for this assignment, use the Internet or Strayer Library to research examples of intellectual property
theft that occurred within the past two (2) years.
Research three to five (3-5) ethical issues relating to marketing and advertising, intellectual property, and regulation
of product safety and examine whether PharmaCARE violated any of the issues in question.
Argue for or against Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) marketing by drug companies. Provide support for your response.
Determine the parties responsible for regulating compounding pharmacies under the current regulatory scheme, the actions

Mr. Phelps’ pain began last evening and is associated with nausea, but he hasn’t vomited. Eating doesn’t seem to affect
the pain, and he hasn’t had any bowel or bladder changes.
In assessing Mr. Phelps’s pain, what information should you obtain?
Mr. Phelps describes his pain as constant, deep and achy, and worse with movement. On a pain scale of 0- to 10, with 10
being the worst pain he has ever experienced, he rates the pain at a 7. He doesn’t want to lie supine and is guarding his
right lower quadrant.

Abdominal assessment shows a normal inspection, normoactive bowel sounds, and no masses, enlargement, or tenderness of the
liver or spleen. However, Mr. Phelps did display rebound tenderness and positive obturator and iliopsoas signs. Based on
his history and physical assessment, the healthcare provider orders a complete blood cell count and urinalysis. The
results indicate a total white blood cell (WBC) count elevation with 96% neutrophils. The urinalysis is normal.

2) When assessing Mr. Phelps’ abdomen, describe the order and specifics associated with the assessment?
Start with inspecting the abdomen noting colour, contour, symmetry, the umbilicus is midline etc.
Next we would auscultate because “percussion and palpation can increase peristalsis which would give a false
interpretation of bowel sounds” (Jarvis, 2014). During auscultation we listen for bowel sounds(character and frequency)
and vascular sounds.
Percussion comes next “to assess the relative density of abdominal contents, to locate organs, and to screen for abdominal
fluid or masses”(Jarvis, 2014).
Palpation is last. You note whether their is tenderness, masses, involuntary rigidity, guarding etc.
3) Mr. Phelps’ signs and symptoms, history, physical assessment, and lab findings suggest which diagnosis? Explain your

Mr. Phelps’s assessments suggest acute appendicitis based on the following findings:positive obturator and iliopsoas sign,
pain in RLQ. “when the iliopsoas muscle is inflamed (which occurs with an inflamed or perforated appendix) pain is felt in
the RLQ” (Jarvis, 2014)
