Morality and Social Responsibility

Philosophical perspectives and theories on morality contribute to an understanding of the deep-rooted human need to question the role human beings play in society. Whether your views align with those of Aristotle, Kant, or Mill, you can explore the reasons behind your inherent motivation to act responsibly. At the outset of your life, you develop habits of thought based on what you are exposed to, where you live, whom you live with, and your experiences. In this Application Assignment, you critically examine these experiences as well as theoretical perspectives on morality and assess how they impact your moral and cultural identity. You also assess how these experiences influence your concept of social responsibility.

To prepare for this Assignment:

•Review the “Classical Theories of Morality” as described in Chapter 3 of the Arthur & Scalet (n.d.) course text and summarize key points of each theory. Does one theory resonate with you more than another?
•Make connections to your own culture. Contemplate whether these three theories are reflected in your own culture.
•Review the Cultural Genogram: Dimensions of Culture document in this week’s Resources. Consider the ways different dimensions of culture inform your moral identity (e.g., how your national, ethnic, and/or gender identity informs your moral identity).
•Consider your response to this week’s Discussion.
•Think about how different dimensions of culture inform your concept of social responsibility.
The Assignment:

Write a 2-page analysis connecting the three “Classical Theories of Morality” to your own cultural identity. Explain how the theories align or do not align with your cultural identity. Include how cultural identity impacts social responsibility. Provide three references using proper APA citation.

(includes some more critical personal idea if possible)

Article preferred to cite:
“Heat Waves in Europe Will Increase, Study Finds” by Jolly, David From the New york times

Guildlines:
Purpose: To think critically about population, environment and agricultural issues by applying concepts from class to current events.

Instructions: Choose a substantive, but brief article from a newspaper, magazine or journal from the past year relating to a topic covered in class, or use one of the assigned readings. It’s nice to have some information that you identify.

Write a two to three page, double-space paper summarizing and critically analyzing the article. A reaction paper should be more than a simple summary of the material; it should contain your opinion or reaction to reading the material. The paper should have three sections: summary of article, initial reaction to the article, and thoughtful analysis, relating class concepts and readings to the article chosen. Attach the article to your paper when you submit it. Please use 12 point font.

Your grade will be determined by: quality of article chosen, summary and critical analysis, and writing style, including grammar (but relatively little weight on style and grammar – but do your best).

Due Date: Reaction papers are due every other week and collected during discussion. These papers will be the basis of discussions for that week. No late papers will be accepted. Reaction papers account for 20 percent of your grade (5 percent each).

Example:

Summary – a short, concise paragraph of the main points of the article.
The New York Times reported on March 24, 2006 that the World Meteorological Association (WMO) continues to find evidence linking global warming and hurricanes. The WMO reported that greenhouse gases including carbon dioxide — blamed for global warming and climate change — had reached their highest levels in the atmosphere. Noting that 2006 was a record year for hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean, the WMO said there is no consensus in the scientific community on the link between hurricanes and global warming, but there are leads. Research into the link between climate change and hurricanes could take up to five years.
Initial Reaction – a paragraph on why this article is important.

Hurricane Katrina is said to be one of the worst natural disasters to hit the United States. It devastated thousands of people, causing over two thousand deaths and billions in economic damage. According to the WMO, disasters like Katrina have become more frequent and catastrophic because of global warming. In addition, many scientists find that global warming is correlated to other natural disasters. For example, El Nino, caused by interaction between abnormally warm or cool seas and the atmosphere, typically triggers drought in eastern Australia and Southeast Asia, and floods in western parts of North and South America. Thus, global warming is a serious problem that will only worsen with increases in atmospheric temperature.

Critical Analysis – a paragraph on how this article relates to the reading.

The question arises as to whether the increase in the atmospheric temperature is a function of human activity or just a natural progression of the Earth’s evolution. In class, we talked about how the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change found evidence linking climate change to human activities. However, some scientists find this evidence to be less than conclusive. Discussion. (For example, the issue seems to depend on XX. Explanation. I believe that the evidence supports YY. Explanation.)
