Historical Themed Research Paper

Historical Themed Research Paper

In this semester, you will write 1 “Themed” Research paper of a word minimum of 2000 words, which will be worth 70 points and is due 12/17 before midnight. A list of historical themes has been provided below and you may choose any theme as the basis for your paper. These are the same themes from your Weekly Wikis and more details about these themes can be viewed in the Weekly Wikis folder. You will pick one event, topic, or a person, etc. of historical importance from each of the 3 grading periods and write a themed research paper based on your 3 selections, comparing and contrasting each of the 3 subjects of your choice under the theme you have chosen. You are required to use a minimum of 6 scholarly sources for your research – NO WIKIPEDIA PERMITTED in citations. Your minimum 6 scholarly sources may include the course text book, my powerpoints and/or lectures (I only count once), but it is not required. You MUST use 2 primary documents as part of your 6 sources. You may of course use more than 6 sources. You must quote each of your sources at least once in your paper, using it to support your analytical writing and citing your sources appropriately according to a writing style guide, either parenthetically or footnoted. A properly formatted Works Cited or Bibliography must also be included. Remember, this is a research paper based on a theme I have provided so you must address that theme throughout the paper. This paper is worth 70 points and is due at the end of the semester, WEDNESDAY 12/17/14. Remember, I DO NOT ACCEPT LATE WORK so you have to turn it in on time to earn credit. I have also attached a sample Themed Research paper as an example of a well done paper.
Further Instructions for your Historical Themed Research Papers:

The Historical Themed Research Paper involves you selecting ONE THEME from the list of 20 themes that you have been writing about in your Weekly Wikis. You may choose any theme you like. DO NOT combine themes – just choose one.

Next, you will choose 3 topics or subjects, one from each grading period that you will research and write about under the theme you have chosen. You will compare their similarities and their differences whenever possible as you provide:
(1) FULL IDENTIFICATION for each of your subjects,
(2) their HISTORICAL CONTEXT or historical setting,
(3) and their HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE as you compose your essay around your theme.

There are NO REQUIRED formatting instructions as far as sections with section titles are concerned, but you may do so if you wish. I think it is easier for you to write a paper that you have organized into sections. But again, it is not required.

You should also develop a THESIS argument for your paper so you have direction to your composition = you have a goal your are aiming for in your analysis and arguments. FOR EXAMPLE: If you want to choose “Technology and its effects on History” as your theme, you could choose: Bronze Casting as your topic from the 1st Grading Period and discuss how the creation of bronze tools and weapons changed societies: Greek Ship Building from the 2nd Grading period and talk about the technology of Greeks Trirememes (war ships) built under Themistocles and how they conquered the Persian Navy: and from the 3rd Grading Period you could talk about the invention of gunpowder weapons in Europe and their role in conquering the New World. All of these could then be linked with a THESIS about Technology advancing warfare and conquest.

TO SUMMARIZE: Whatever THEME you choose, you then choose 3 TOPICS, one from each grading period, and devise a THESIS argument to direct your research, analysis and composition. Please pay attention to the required minimum word count and required sources as stipulated in the instructions.
