Topics must: (1) concern Buddhism; and (2) use an academic approach. You must present a clear thesis or position on an issue and support it with citations. At least three scholarly sources in addition to course readings should be consulted. Remember to consult Harvard University’s A Guide to Writing in Religious Studies (2007) for additional guidance. . Past and potential topics include: . ??•?Scriptural / narrative analysis: Choose a primary Buddhist text (a sutra for example) and supplement with additional secondary sources. Perform an in-depth reading of the text with a particular issue or question in mind (e.g., A close reading of the life of the Buddha to show how its structure represents Buddhist doctrine or ritual). . •?Doctrinal / philosophical analysis: Focus on a particular philosophical problem, consulting primary and secondary analyses in Buddhist philosophy (e.g., Are ideas of rebirth and karma compatible with ideas of no-self and emptiness? How does enlightenment or awakening occur?). . •?Ritual / praxis focus: Choose one or more forms of Buddhist practice (e.g. meditation, devotion, pilgrimage, chanting, and so on), and explain how each practice functions (e.g., Do all practices have the same effect? How do they move the practitioner towards the goal of awakening?). . •?Sociological analysis: Focus on the social and economic relationships in one type of Buddhist group, together with a problem that faces the group (e.g. explain the difference between lay persons and monastics, is it better to be one or the other? why or why not?). . •?Anthropological / fieldwork analysis: Perform a survey of one or more Buddhist institutions or religious sites in the Lower Mainland (Vancouver and the surrounding area), imitating the published fieldwork of anthropologists of Buddhism (e.g., How is the group organized? What forms of ritual, practice, or doctrine do they pursue?). . •?Historical analysis: Choose a specific place and time (you may choose the modern period as well). Explain, using historical examples, why or how something occurred or is structured in a particular way. . •?Survey and Issue: Choose one of the regions covered in the course: Southeast, East, or North Asia. Craft an introduction to the region, similar to what you might find in an encyclopedia, and identify one issue or controversy relevant to the region (e.g., the position of women).
