The term “essay” means “to attempt,” “to test,” or “to try.”

Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to give you a chance to reflect on what we have done over the term and to articulate what it means to you.

Audience: The essay is written for those who have read what you have read, but who may not have interpreted the material for the course in the way that you have. This means that you do not have to summarize, but that you do have to support any claims you make.

Subject: In this course, we have read translations of
? texts carved in stone or painted on a vase,
? a transliteration of a missing codex,
? oral traditions in literary form,
? first hand testimony of violence.

We have also read a novel that was written in English, but which moves back and forth between Guatemala and Los Angeles.

Stance: The term “essay” means “to attempt,” “to test,” or “to try.” This is where you get to try out or test your ideas. You do not have to impress your audience with scholarlysounding rhetoric, nor do you have to take a position that is etched in stone and must be true for all time. Instead, a more modest approach to your material, in which you weave together elements of the different texts you are reflecting upon with various ideas or experiences you have had, is appropriate. If you are uncertain, at least be clear about why you are uncertain, and see if you can figure out what is at stake in your uncertainty. Remember, by testing an idea that is only partially adequate, you may discover something, but at the least you will become clear about the strengths and weaknesses of your idea.

• Where there are multiple concepts listed together, you may only do only one. If you do more than one, we will grade only the first one & then subtract 1 point.*
• Do not give more than one answer per concept. You will lose 1 point for each additional example you give even if all of the examples are correct.*
• Write your examples in such a way that illustrates that you understand the concept. However, you should NOT write out a definition & then an example.
• Your answers should be in the format of a list. You will lose half of the points if you write your answers as an essay.

To complete this task successfully you will need to gather data about the organisation and its environment, and to apply relevant theory to that data. In applying relevant theory to the data you should develop a critical line of reasoning in support of your argument.
The task has four elements reflected in the questions below and together should form a coherent piece of work.
1. What are the strategic issues facing the organisation?
2. What goals should the organisation be setting?
3. What actions would you recommend the organisation takes? What would be a strategy statement that summarised those actions?
4. What would be the key elements of a performance management system to develop the strategy?

Additional Information
The answer should be in the region of 5000 words in length. There is no prescribed format for the assignment but a report format is probably the most suitable. The submission should cite appropriate academic sources and data sources. Sources of data to support your arguments should be cited but it is not necessary to attach copies of raw data as appendices. Appendices should be used to support arguments made in the document and will not attract marks in their own right.

Class engagement and teaching effectiveness (does the class get involved, and do they learn in a sustained way?)

Discussion Paper: One (1) typed page per group, which has sections for
• Team name
• Team members
• Learning objective
• Detailed paragraph explaining the learning objective in more detail, with citations
• Plan of presentation (at least one substantial paragraph that explains what will happen in class and why it is hoped it will teach the learning objective)
• Role of individual group members (can be the same for everyone!)
• References
Bring a hard copy of the paper to class, and also email it to the Professor and TA, as well as emailing any presentation slides (e.g. .ppt files) and other materials (e.g. handout docs).
Title the paper: “ESE 200 Presentation group X.doc”, where X is your group number.
If your presentation is too big to upload to Moodle, it can be brought in on a memory stick on the day of your presentation. All materials must include “ESE 200 Presentation group X” in their file name – this will help us keep track of things.
In-class Presentation: One presentation per group.
Every group will write one clicker question with 5 answers (of which 1 or more is the correct answer, the others being incorrect, but plausible, “distractor” answers). The presentation will be a sequence of
1. An initial iclicker question
2. A quite short explanation of the concept that indirectly helps with the clicker question posed
3. A class discussion coupled with a second response to the initial iclicker question
Some other guidelines:
• Order will be in initial learning objective number – 1 to 10 on the Tuesday, 11-20 on the Thursday
• 5 minutes maximum per presentation, I will give a one minute warning at 4 minutes.
• Can involve the A/V equipment in the classroom, or any materials that you bring to class. Given at least a week’s notice we can photocopy handouts.
• It’s okay if you don’t use all your time!
Grading criteria are:
1. Class engagement and teaching effectiveness (does the class get involved, and do they learn in a sustained way?) 20 points
2. Understanding of the concept (does the group presenting show that they themselves have a deep understanding of the learning objective?) 20 points
3. Teamwork (does it appear that the team worked together?) 10 points
Advice:
o Grading part 1 will mainly be a result of what happens in the class. Is the iclicker question good? Is the presentation that explains the concept well done?
o Grading part 2 and 3 will depend in large part on the discussion paper and how it compares with what happens in class.
o Start planning how you will meet in your groups and make progress! Assign roles – like planner, presentation leader, paper leader, or whatever.

United States and China relations

Assignment will be marked down for each day or fraction of a day late (that is, if you send it at two minutes after midnight, it’s late). Students turning in papers containing plagiarism will fail the course.

Your paper will address the following question: In the next 10 years, will there be more or less international cooperation on important issues between the United States and China than there is today?

Sources: Your paper should refer to at least one assigned course reading, plus at least three articles from mainstream news sources (New York Times, Washington Post, CNN, BBC, Wall Street Journal, Al Jazeera, etc.). The news sources you use must have been published after September 1, 2014. There is no need to research more extensive background material from books, government documents, etc. Sources must be cited properly, using a consistent citation format (e.g. MLA, APA, or Chicago).

This assignment asks you to apply concepts from the course to a particular, real-world issue.

Grades will be based on three things:
Writing. The paper must have a clear thesis, stated early. The rest of the paper should contain facts and logic that support the thesis, and should properly cite sources.
Analysis of factors that international politics more cooperative or conflictual.
Analysis of factors that make larger countries more or less attractive as alliance partners.
Analysis of factors that make the period of American primacy more or less stable.
There is, of course, no one right answer to any of these questions; you will be graded on the thoughtfulness of your analysis. You should make a specific prediction in the paper, not advocate a particular policy. In other words, explain what countries will do, not what you think they should do.
