MLK/Malcolm X: FBI Director Dominic DeBrincat detailing your investigation of the two most prominent Civil Rights advocates of the 1960s

1) Objective: As a field operative, write a 7-pages memo to FBI Director Dominic DeBrincat detailing your investigation of the two most prominent Civil Rights advocates of the 1960s, Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X (nee Malcolm Little). In your memo, detail the following:
1) Core principals of their Civil Rights philosophies/platforms/agendas;
*Note: In addressing this element, a good memo will be mindful of:
a) Key differences
b) Key similarities
c) Any change over time in philosophies/approaches for either King or X
2) Benefits that could come from their success;
3) The threats they pose to American values and institutions.
2) Sources: Your findings may come only from the primary documents in PART II of the assigned book, Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, and the Civil Rights Struggle of the 1950s and 1960s: A Brief History with Documents, edited by David Howard-Pitney. While you may read Part I and the editor?s italicized descriptions preceding each document in Part II, the only evidence you should be paraphrasing, quoting, and citing as your evidence are the actual primary source documents in Part II.
3) Tip on Time Context: For this assignment to work, we must ignore the nasty fact that King and X were assassinated (in 1968 and 1965 respectively). For convenience?s sake, assume that both figures are alive at the time you?re writing this memo, and that the speeches and documents in the text represent their bodies of work as if they were alive at the same time.
4) Citations: You may simply cite your sources by noting page numbers in parentheses.
-You may not use any other sources, especially Internet sources. All the context/ background and documents you might need are in the assigned text. If I find that you?ve appropriated or adopted any quote or idea from the internet or any unauthorized source, you will fail.

Analytical essays

Analytical essays should be focused on making a debatable claim about the work in question; creative essays should be focused on presenting a work or kind of work from a different angle. Informational essays or essays consisting of summary are not appropriate for either type of essay. Both types of essay should be supported with discussion of specific passages from the text(s) on which the essay is focused. The essay grading rubric can be found here for the analytical choices, and here for the creative choices.

DISCLAIMER: Originality of attachments will be verified by Turnitin. Both you and your instructor will receive the results.

Choose 1 of the following topics from either the Analytical or Creative categories. For the analytical choices, be sure to write a thesis-driven essay in response to the topic. Creative choices should be written as narratives.

Analytical Choices
Who Painted the Lion? Chaucer’s Wife of Bath, as she describes her own life and marriages in her prologue, points out the problem that stories about women seem to have been mostly written by men: “Who painted first the lion, tell me who?” (Chaucer 816). Many of these, she opines, are negative, and the implication is that it would be different if women were writing the stories themselves. Choose 1 female character from the tales (not the prologues) in The Canterbury Tales or from any of our other earlier readings, and make a claim about whether this female figure is positive, negative, or neutral. Use only passages from the story itself (and, if you’re writing on a part of The Canterbury Tales, the tale-teller’s prologue) to support your position.

The Return of Greek Mythology: The setting of “The Knight’s Tale” is ancient Greece, and it may be tempting to compare this story to The Iliad. Think back to our Week 2 reading and compare the heroic ideals depicted in The Iliad with the heroic ideals depicted in “The Knight’s Tale.” Can we read “The Knight’s Tale” as being a direct reflection of the heroic ideals we find in The Iliad? Why or why not?

Ruling Well in the Real World: Choose one leader from US history and evaluate him or her in terms of EITHER Machiavelli’s model of an ideal prince OR Confucius’ model of a good leader. Support your thesis with quotations of and references to specific passages from the chosen author’s work and with specific details from these politicians’ careers. Some minor historical research is allowed for this topic.

Good Rulers in Fictional Works: Choose one leader or character from our earlier assigned readings (from Weeks 2-5) and evaluate him or her in terms of EITHER Machiavelli’s model of an ideal prince OR Confucius’ model of a good leader. Support your thesis with quotations of and references to specific passages from the two chosen works.

Judging Other Tales: Choose one important character any one of the works assigned in Weeks 2-5 (choose a single tale if using a work from Weeks 4 or 5), and evaluate him or her using the moral structures set up by Dante in our reading from The Inferno. Leaving aside the character’s religion (which would automatically relegate some characters at least to Limbo), would this character be hell-worthy in Dante’s view? Why or why not?

Make your own topic: create your own critical question to answer in your essay. If you choose this topic you must contact the instructor for approval by Thursday of Week 8. Essay submissions with unapproved topics will be returned.

Creative Choices
The Tale as Told by Another Character: Re-write a story from the point of view of a character other than the original protagonist/main character (you may use any of the fiction—folktales, Chaucerian tales, epics, or drama—for this, but write it as a short story). Make your re-writing no more than 700 words, and include a follow-up personal essay of about 200 words that explains why you made the choices you did in presenting the new version of the story.

In the Style Of . . . : Choose 1 work from our readings and re-write in the style of another work we read, for instance, re-write a folktale in the “advice to princes” style, or part of an epic as a folktale. Make your re-writing no more than 700 words, and include a follow-up personal essay of at least 200 words that explains why you made the choices you did when re-writing the story.
Please contact the instructor with any questions. Beginning the essay early in the week is recommended, as last-minute inquiries may not be answered until after the due date.

Baudrillard suggests that the present era is characterised by the sign of the real assuming greater importance than the real itself. He terms this the hyper-real.

An abbreviation of the title, plus name and enrolment number, are to be placed as a header on each page. Page numbers are to be inserted at the bottom of the page.

The essay must be referenced using the Harvard system. The references list is not included in the word-count. You are advised to consult the Advice Note on Essay Writing which can be found on the module’s Blackboard site.

Special note on referencing

Please note that the referencing approach should be standard Harvard. That means that in-text citations should be matched by one comprehensive list of references. Do not add a second list styled ‘Bibliography’.

If you consult a source and find that it assists you in your work, you should find a reason to cite it in the text and include it in your References List. You are advised to study the assessment criteria in order to appreciate the standard required.

Titles

Baudrillard suggests that the present era is characterised by the sign of the real assuming greater importance than the real itself. He terms this the hyper-real[ Baudrillard, J. (1988) Simulacra and Simulations, in M. Poster (ed) Jean Baudrillard: Selected Writings, Oxford: Polity Press, pp 166-184.].

Critically discuss this suggestion. You should make reference to the theoretical origins of the concept of the hyper-real, and illustrate your understanding with examples from the tourism and/or events fields.

Demand-side Policies and the Great Recession of 2008

Macroeconomic analysis deals with the crucial issue of government involvement in the operation of “free market economy.” The Keynesian model suggests that it is the responsibility of the government to help to stabilize the economy. Stabilization policies (demand-side and supply-side policies) are undertaken by the federal government to counteract business cycle fluctuations and prevent high rates of unemployment and inflation. Demand side policies are government attempts to alter aggregate demand (AD) through using fiscal (cutting taxes and increasing government spending) or monetary policy (reducing interest rates). To shift the AD to the right, the government has to increase the government spending (the G-component of AD) causing consumer expenditures (the C-component of AD) to increase. Alternatively the feral Reserve could cut interest rates reducing the cost of borrowing thereby encouraging consumer spending and investment borrowing. Both policies will lead to an increase in AD.

Develop an essay discussing the fiscal and the monetary policies adopted and implemented by the federal during the Great Recession and their impacts on the U.S. economy.Complete this essay in a Microsoft Word document, and in APA format. Note your submission will automatically be submitted through “TurnItIn” for plagiarism review. Please note that a minimum of 700 words for your essay is required.

Your paper should be structured as follows

1. Cover page with a running head
2. Introduction: What is the economic meaning of a recession?
· A brief discussion of fiscal policies
· A brief discussion of monetary policies
3. Conclusions: Discuss the extent to which the use of demand side policies (fiscal policy and monetary policy) during the Great Recession of 2008 has been successful in restoring economic growth and reducing unemployment
4. References

Political Science: Appreciate the importance of politics in his or her daily living

It is important to remember the learning outcomes when writing this paper because, in completing
the paper, you will have fulfilled some of them. After successfully completing this course, a
student should be able to:
• Appreciate the importance of politics in his or her daily living.
• Have a basic knowledge of the American political system and its historical context.
• Develop an understanding of the challenges of maintaining democratic governance in
a pluralistic, ethnically diverse society.
• Integrate knowledge of American politics with her or his own personal opinions.
These are based on the following program learning objectives:
1. Analyze and apply theories of politics and society to contemporary politics.
2. Integrate political knowledge and personal experiences with faith commitments, civic
responsibilities, and ethnic and gender identities.
3. Compare political institutions, governmental and non-governmental actors, and political
cultures in the United States and other states, distinguishing basic differences and
similarities among them.

Your Task
In your paper, you will analyze how the Christian Right have influence your politics.
Evangelical Christianity has been a huge part of American politics since the early 1980s.
It has impacts all Americans, regardless if you are an evangelical or not because they help
determine the electoral coalitions in American politics. You will use the Wilcox reading
to help you in this regard.
So far in this class, you have learned many terms and concepts that apply to the
concepts of evangelicals in America: faction, party system, ideology, interest group,
lobbying, just to name a few. Be sure to use this concepts when writing your paper. One
of the main reasons for this paper is for you to learn to integrate what you have learned in
the class
Many of you come from conservative evangelical backgrounds, so you will be
very familiar with the topic. But even for those of you who aren’t these people should be
of great interest to you because of their importance to American politics. So regardless of
your background or political learning, you will be able to get something out of analyzing
this specific group.

Step 1
Give an overview of the policy areas that you care about. You are given 100 points to
allocate to any policy areas that you want. For example, suppose that you care about
defense, taxation and spending, and the environment. Then your allocation of points should go into a table. Remember that they should add up to 100. Here is an example of
what it should look like.
Defense Taxes and spending Gay marriage Environment
40 20 30 10

Step 2
Determining who you are. Everyone should fall into one of these categories.
Foreign Student: You will have to pretend that you are an American. You can mention
that you are a foreign student and analyze American politics from an objective
perspective. You can talk about how evangelicals influence the things that are not related
to moral values, like trade relations with Japan and China.
Conservative Evangelical: You can analyze the topics from this very interesting
perspective if you fall under this category. Do politically active Christian fundamentalists
represent your political views exactly? If not, how do they differ? And how does the fact
that evangelicals are in the Republican Party coalition effect the way your policy
preferences are actually translated into policy? For example, you may have conservative
views on abortion, drug control, and gay marriage, but how do Republicans represent
your views on taxation and spending, environmental policy, and foreign affairs? Does the
Republican platform align perfectly with your views?
Non-conservative Evangelical: These are the people who are either non-religious,
religious but non-Christian, or if Christian than not of the evangelical strand of
Christianity. Even if you are not a conservative evangelical, these people still influence
the politics that you must encounter. Some of you may prefer lower taxes and less
government spending, but the party that advocates these things also advocates for
restricting abortion, ban gay marriage, and have strict punishments for even the smallest
infraction on illicit drugs. Do these things hurt your ability to support the Republican
Party or do you simply not care that they advocate these things? Or maybe you’re a
libertarian and care equally about the government staying out of the lives of people’s
economic and social activities.

Step 3
Once you determine which category you fall under, now analyze how the Christian Right
affects your politics and write the paper. One of the great resources that you can use if the
Wilcox book to help you understand who evangelicals are and analyze how they have
changed the American political landscape. Another helpful resources is the PBS
documentary on God in America:
https://www.pbs.org/godinamerica/
I recommend paying attention to chapter 5 and 6. These give a very interesting history of
the evangelical movement in America. And of course you can use other resources that
you find. This is where the Pepperdine access to academic journals and newspapers come
in handy.
Paper Organization
Your name should be specified at the top right hand corner of the first page. Use standard
undergraduate paper formatting: 1 inch margins, 12 point font, double spaced, ect. The
suggested length of the paper is 4-5 pages long, but length should not be that much of an
issue. Make sure that you write enough that gives sufficient information but also make
sure that you don’t go on rambling. I will take off points if you are not succinct enough.

Other helpful notes:
-talk about evangelical right and their progress in the american electorate as a group
-how they’re a faction and act within the party system that they’re in- the 6th party system that were in- how they’re fitting in
-who’s arguing with them and who are they allying with?
