Television and citizenship: Compare and contrast Graham Murdoch’s framework for understanding citizenship as a complex ideal of modernity with Anna McCarthy’s framework for understanding citizenship as a Cold War discourse for governing

1) Compare and contrast Graham Murdoch’s framework for understanding citizenship as a complex ideal of modernity with Anna McCarthy’s framework for understanding citizenship as a Cold War discourse for governing. Identify the central conceptual framework for each. Compare how each is concerned with neoliberalism. Identify one strength and one weakness in both frameworks. (Read the Lecture 2 powerpoint)

2) Answer 2a OR 2b:

2a) How did commercial television engage with, and seek to transform, ethnic working class life in postwar America (as elaborated in the George Lipsitz article)? Include in your answer what constituted ethnic working class memories and what constituted the postwar consumer ideal. How did the The Honeymooners episode (“The Blond”) negotiate working class ethnic identities (and their memories) and postwar consumerism?

2b) Regarding Steven Classen’s article, how did the civil rights campaign to end the racist practices of television in Jackson Mississippi use the concept of consumer rights to challenge these racist practices? How did the concept of consumer rights within the framework of “legal liberalism” limit the FCC’s response to African American struggles for civil rights? How were these differences between consumer rights and African American demands for civil rights evident in the NBC documentary Sit-In.

3) Elaborate Pierre Bourdieu’s framework for understanding taste hierarchies. What is the significance of these taste hierarchies in thinking about television and citizenship? Use an example from the Ouellette reading and one from the Newman/Levine reading to illustrate your points. Use an example of your choice (that is not from the reading or from class lecture) to illustrate your points.

SUPPLY CHAIN THEORY – Frito-Lay, Inc

During this SLP I have pick the Frito-Lay, Inc
Overview of the Session Long Project (SLP)
This Session Long Project is about the Supply Chain. It is divided into 5 assignments just like all other SLPs at TUI. Each assignment focuses on a different aspect of the Supply Chain: SLP1 is focusing on a specific product, the producer of that product, and the key competitors in that industry as well as the suppliers and customers of the target company. SLP2 extends the Supply Chain discussed in SLP1 into what is known as the Extended Enterprise Supply Chain, which explodes the supplier channels all the way back to the Raw Materials and those industries which provide the raw materials. And it explodes the Customers frontwards all the way to the Retail and consumer. SLP3 then looks at this EESC and identifies the transportation methods used and where the three modes of water, rail, and road are key aspects. SLP4 then explores the EESC to identify the issues with the environment and sustainability. The last SLP looks at the whole infrastructure of the U.S. including the transportation network, energy, and communications and discusses the state of the infrastructure and possible solutions for its improvement.

Assignment 1 – the Primary Supply Chain
Want to review about how to Research and Write Academic Papers?

This SLP, like most other SLPs in TUI courses, requires research and writing academic papers. You need to know how to use and cite references correctly. You learned how to do this ETH501.

But just in case you need a refresher, here are two links to help you.

TUI’s Well Written Paper

Purdue’s Online Writing Library (OWL)

Read the resources for SLP1 in the Background page.

For this first SLP you will choose a product and a company that you will use throughout all of the SLPs.

Choose a consumer product – one of these:
Barbeque grill,
leather jacket,
baby stroller,
potato chips,
hockey stick, or
concrete block.
Choose a company that produces this product in the USA (materials may come from abroad). You will research this product, company and the industry and the related Supply Chain.

You can go to several websites to find out how the product is made and what the corresponding materials are that are needed to produce it:

www.madehow.com, and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page are two possible websites. There are others if you search for them.

Once you have chosen a product, you can search for a company that produces this product. Then you can research this company and the specific brand. Search the company’s website. If it is a publicly held company you can find its 10k report for good information. And also search ProQuest for articles about this company.

What is the size of the market for this general product, e.g. how many of these are sold or the total sales of these per year at the retail level?

What is the brand of the product and the company you are focusing on and what is its market share for this product? What are the locations of the company in the US?
Then research the competition for this product

What are 3 – 5 competitors of this company and their market share for their brands?
Now research the supply chain:

Upstream Supply Chain. What are the key supplies and materials needed to produce this product? Include not only the materials that go into the product, but also any packaging that is needed. Identify as many of the actual supplier companies as you can and where they are located in the U.S.

Downstream Supply Chain. What are the customers of this company/industry? Do they sell to distributors, wholesalers, retailers? Identify as many customers as you can and where they are located in the U.S.

Generate a diagram of this Supply Chain including the specific company/industry and showing the suppliers and customers.
Session Long Project
Choose a product from the list and find a company that produces this product in the USA. Research this company and this product. Identify the size of the market. Identify the

SLP Assignment Expectations
The paper should include:major locations of the company. Identify key competitors in the industry. Identify key components, materials and packaging needed to produce this product. Identify key upstream and downstream aspects of the supply chain and locations of suppliers and customers. Discuss this supply chain. Generate a diagram of the SC.

Background: review and discuss the product, company, and industry
Diagram: Include a diagram of the Supply Chain
Industry Competitors: Identify the competitors to the target company and the competing brands.
Supply Chain Discussion: Discuss key upstream (supplies/suppliers) and downstream (customers) aspects of the SC and locations of each.

Investigated issues of race (Harlem Renaissance), poverty (Great Depression), and militarism (World War I)

In this second unit of study, we have investigated issues of race (Harlem Renaissance), poverty (Great Depression), and militarism (World War I). Author Cornel Wests op-ed column Dr. King Weeps From His Grave seems to suggest that our nation continued to deal with these same problems during Kings lifetime, and still struggles with them today. Pick one of the following issues addressed by Wests article racism, poverty/materialism, or militarism and explain how this issue was manifested in the first half of the 20th century (1900-1950). Then, using Wests article and your own knowledge and opinion as the basis for your argument, explain whether this issue has gotten more or less problematic in our day and age.

Rubric:

Summary of the article 10% of total paper grade. Summary should be concise yet specific. Explain what the article was about, in your own words. Summary should focus on particular issues or ideas that were of interest to you.

Discussion of early 20th century issue/theme 55% of total paper grade. Only one issue (racism, materialism, or militarism) should be discussed, but in detail. Coverage of the issue needs to include a general description of it, as well as facts from the text that will provide supporting detail (such as, how widespread was the issue? What were some of the symptoms of it?). Paper should also provide an artistic or literary example that can illuminate the manifestation of the issue in the first half of the 20th century.

Relation to contemporary life 25% of total paper grade. Should be at least 1 full paragraph in length. Strive to integrate detailed examples from Wests article, as well as at least 1 original, unique point of your own that will illustrate the manifestation of the early 20th century issue in the present day. Make sure to draw conclusions as to whether the issue has become worse or better in the 21st century.

Writing 10% of total paper grade. Rules of spelling and grammar should be followed. There should be logical organization to the flow of the paper, as well as an introduction and conclusion. Paper can and should include opinion.

Rhetoric in the public sphere

In your first paragraph, explain the concept of “the public sphere” (the “normative ideal”) and why it is important for democracy. You should reference (cite and/or paraphrase) Habermas, Gore, or Both. In the second paragraph, offer a critique of the public sphere concept—where the normative ideal is flawed, problematic, or unrealistic when put into practice. (Just ONE critique is fine; you don’t have the space to explore every flaw, or all four of Fraser’s arguments.) You might reference Fraser here, and/or offer your own ideas. Finally, propose 3-5 research questions that grow out of what you’ve learned about the public sphere. (The last part of your exercise will be a numbered set of questions.) These questions should be specific, and should point toward potential paper topics that you genuinely care about. You can engage several different topic ideas with your questions, OR you can offer several related questions on just one idea. Put some care into crafting your questions; they are the most important part of this assignment. 1-2 pages, typed, double-spaced.

Develop a directed reading activity

Following the five-step process outlined in your text, pp.353-4, develop a directed reading activity. Post your Directed Reading Activity (DRA) using pre-reading, during reading, and post-reading strategies (include a technology application and comprehension or vocabulary strategy follow up activity.) State the grade level for which you have developed this activity. The Directed Reading Activity is a teaching strategy used to extend and strengthen a student’s reading abilities. It can be used with a story from a published reading series or with any other reading selection, including content area materials and trade books. The following five components are often included in the DRA:

1. Motivation and Development of Background (Preparation):
•Experiential background/concepts – fill in the gaps
•Critical vocabulary – necessary for the understanding of the story. Show how words are related to each other
•Reading Strategies – best strategy for the selection
•Purpose for Reading – set by teacher or class
•Interest – create interest

2. Directed Story Reading (silent and oral)
• Students provided with purpose questions

•First reading silent – understanding most important.
•Follow-up discussion
•Possible oral reading (not always included in upper-grade lessons)

3. Strategy or skill building – at some point in the lesson, the teacher provides direct instruction in one or more word recognition or comprehension strategies of skills.

4. Follow-up practice of strategies and skills learned.

5. Enrichment activities – these activities may connect the story with art, music, or creative writing, or may lead the students to read additional material on the same topic or by the same author.
